Bless the animals The Grotto will observe its 22nd annual Blessing of the Animals on Sunday, July 17 at 2 p.m. in the sanctuarys central plaza. The Rev. Jack Topper will preside. This ceremony offers individuals with pets an opportunity to reflect upon the positive impact animals have on our emotional and physical well-being. The event attracts a wide variety of animals and their human friends. Community outreach hosted on Rocky Butte Once a year, City Bible Church, reaches out to the community with its City Summer Celebration. Set for Sunday, July 17 from 3 to 7 p.m. organizers say guests will enjoy live music and entertainment as well as games, food and a childrens carnival. There will be an inflatable fun zone and Portland fire and rescue trucks will be on hand. Single moms, widows and needy families will be eligible for car washes and groceries and children may win special prizes such as bikes, scooters or CD players. Local church offers cancer support group Memo readers are invited to the Exceptional Cancer Support for Patients and Family course at Parkrose United Methodist Church, 11111 N.E. Knott St. The current eight-week course is underway, but anyone interested will be welcomed each Monday in July from 7 to 8 p.m. This summer participants will learn how to maximize effectiveness in supporting others while building deep friendships through the healing process. Some meetings will feature expert speakers; others will involve sharing with each other. Enjoy a twilight celebration People of all faiths are invited to refresh the soul and spirit at the annual celebration of the feast of St. Anne at The Grotto. The celebration will be held on Tuesday, July 26 at 7:30 p.m. outside on the plaza. The theme is Leading a purposeful life. The Rev. Ignatius Kissel will preside. Considering St. Anne in the context of her roles as mother, grandmother and spiritual teacher, this evening of liturgy and reflection will focus on continuing to grow in the spiritual life and being an active presence with the Church throughout our lives. The Third Annual 205 Early Riser Kiwanis Garage Sale will be held in conjunction with the Sellwood-Moreland Neighborhood Garage Sale on Friday and Saturday, July 8 and 9. Chairs, small tables, dishware, decorative glass, collectibles, tools, gardening equipment, books, magazines, vinyl records, and other household items will be offered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Volunteers from the Parkrose High School Bronco Boosters will be on hand from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., rain or shine, to receive your donation. All monies raised benefit Parkrose High School students. Long-time organizer Dave Luce supervises the operation. Store brands must first be separated from national labels. Cans and plastic bottles are counted and bagged separately. Glass beer bottles are sorted by height and then cased to facilitate counting and hauling. Because Luce and his Booster cohorts are willing to put in the time and work, Parkrose High students benefited to the tune of $4,000 last year.
