Organization lets women help each other
Soroptimist, coined from the Latin words “soror” and “optima” (the best for women), was founded in 1921 in Oakland, California. Eighty professional women formed the first Soroptimist Club to “foster the ideal” of service.

Today Soroptimist are in 112 countries with over 100,000 members worldwide. Soroptimist International of the Americas is the largest of the four federations in Soroptimist International, with nearly 50,000 members representing 20 countries and territories.

The Soroptimists of Portland East is an organization of involved, dedicated, and professional businesswomen. They work to advance families, primarily those in East County, by empowering women through fund-raising and by making contributions to individuals and organizations that promote their goals.

Recently, the Soroptimist International of Portland East Foundation awarded six community service organizations with a total of $12,000 to fund various holiday programs including helping to feed over 6000 Mid-county families and providing gifts for underprivileged children.

A major source of funds for the Soroptimist of Portland East is the All-Star Bingo Hall, located on the corner of S.E. 146th Ave. and Stark St. Come play bingo - maybe even win a little cash - and support local women and children at the same time. All proceeds are donated to local community organizations that address the needs of women and children.

If you are a professional woman who would like to make a difference, call Tina Kincaid at 503-252-3070, e-mail soroptimistpdxe@hotmail.com, or write to P.O. Box 30657, Portland, OR 97294-3657. First timers get treated to lunch, so come learn about this group and enjoy a meal. The Soroptimists meet every Wednesday at noon in the banquet room of the New Copper Penny Restaurant, located on the corner of S.E. 92nd Ave. and Foster Rd.
