Calendar (continued) School Corner Fundraising for scholarships On the first Saturday of each month at Parkrose High School, members of the Parkrose High Bronco Boosters collect pop cans and bottles to raise funds for scholarships. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1, the Bronco Boosters will collect returnable aluminum cans and glass and plastic bottles at Parkrose High School, 12003 N.E. Shaver St. Please save your bottles and cans and donate them to the students of Parkrose High. Get back to school When your child returns to school, make it your resolution to become more involved. Come to a school board meeting and find out what is going on at your childs school. Senior Resources Finding ways to deal with pain People can change their lives by the way they think about and experience pain. Dr. John Muench, a member of the Department of Family Medicine at Oregon Health Sciences University, will be presenting a free informational session on chronic pain and the art of managing the systems on Thursday, Jan. 9 at 1:15 p.m. at the East Portland Community Center, 740 S.E. 106th Ave. The YWCA Senior Services program office is sponsoring the session, as well as a six-week workshop filled with information, activities and techniques geared toward minimizing the debilitating effect that pain has on peoples lives. The class and a book called Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions will be offered free to people over 60 years old who suffer from low back pain. This class is offered free as part of a research project sponsored by the Health Resources and Services Administration of the state Department of Human Services. For more information, please call 503-988-6073. Take action The Elders in Action is a group dedicated to protecting and furthering seniors rights. The Elders in Action commission advocates seniors rights and advises government agencies such as the Department of Aging and Disability Services. The commission also works to achieve beneficial legislation for seniors focusing on the areas of transportation for homebound seniors, housing, nutrition and health care. Come participate in a meeting of the commission, which has been a strong voice for seniors for over 30 years. The Elders in Action Commission invites interested citizens to join them on Wednesday, Jan. 15 from 12:30 to 3 p.m. in Neighborhood House, 7688 S.W. Capitol Highway in Portland. Seniors - take advantage of free services The Senior Services Program Office hosts many free informational clinics and health checks. Senior Services offers a free law clinic every Friday with half-hour consultations. Make your appointment for these free services today! Medicare advice is available as well, through Senior Health Insurance Benefits Assistance (SHIBA). Volunteers help both seniors and people with disabilities to understand their rights, make informed choices on how to receive their benefits, and file claims and appeals. Appointments are required. Help a child and yourself The Foster Grandparent Program is looking for seniors sixty years and up on a limited income to help at-risk children in Portland. These children need positive role models to help them with reading, developing social skills, and much more. Not only do the foster grandparents get to help out a child, but they also receive two hundred dollars a month tax-free. The program also offers other benefits, including meal and travel compensation, paid time off and sick leave. No experience is necessary, just the desire to better a childs life. For more information, please call Randy Lucas 503-232-0007 ext. 202. Avoid costly traffic tickets Seniors now have the chance to both improve their driving skills and save money on insurance. The American Association of Retired People is offering 55 Alive defensive driving course. This course helps teach older citizens strategies of safe driving. Learn tricks of the trade to help improve your reflexes, as well as reviewing traffic laws you may have forgotten or that have changed recently. Not only will you avoid costly tickets, fines and accidents, but the 55 Alive driving course can also help save you money on your car insurance - check with your insurance provider. The class is a refresher course in driving skills and general information, available to anyone aged 55 or over. All this is offered for a fee of just $10. Strengthen your bones and joints Gentle weight-bearing exercise and balancing techniques are ways to prevent and stabilize osteoporosis and arthritis. The YWCA Senior Services program office is sponsoring a class offering such exercises starting this winter for men and women suffering from these ailments. Participants will also learn about health and nutrition and how to increase their activity level. The next session begins Monday, Jan. 6 and continues through March 14. The class meets Monday and Friday from 10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. at the East Portland Community Center, 740 SE 106th Avenue, Portland. Participants should register at the first class.
