‘Mom and Pop’ franchise marks two decades of service to Mid-County
After two decades can your business be called an area landmark? In 1981, Bob and Marianne Pool opened the Pig ‘N Pancake restaurant on Northeast Glisan Street near 122nd Avenue. Over the years the previous occupants of the building/restaurant had been Fancy Dan’s, Sinclair’s and for two years before the present incarnation, it was called The Breakfast Pantry. The Glisan Street location was the Poole’s third Pig ‘N Pancake. The first two were established in 1961 in Seaside and Astoria in 1967.

In November 1985, Feimun and Bernadette ‘Bernie’ Lum purchased the Mid-County Pig ‘N Pancake location, becoming the first franchisees. Currently there are five Pig ‘N Pancakes operating in Oregon. In addition to the Mid-County, Seaside and Astoria locations, there are Pig ‘N Pancake’s in Tualatin and Cannon Beach.

“Even though we’re a franchise, we’re closer to a ‘Mom and Pop’ operation,” says Lum. He continues, “We offer quality food at reasonable prices and good service in a comfortable atmosphere. We try to have consistency in every facet of the operation,” Lum asserts. As proof of this, Lum points to Julie Swenson and Lisa Burnham, Pig ‘N Pancake waitresses for 18 and 16 years respectively, and to Hostess Lori Bush who has been with the Lums since the day they opened in 1985.

Bernie Lum says of her eighteen years, “I look forward to getting up every morning and seeing my friends. There are so many fond memories of the people I’ve met and the friends I’ve made over the years. We’ve been so fortunate to have such loyal customers and employees. They’re what really keeps the business going. We couldn’t do it without people like Lori, Julie and Lisa, and customers like Freida (94 year old Frieda Gartner and her husband Hans opened Gartner’s Country Meat Market, another Mid-county landmark, in 1941). They’re all my friends. Most of my customers have been coming in for so long with their families that now their kids are grown and they’re bringing their kids in, I feel like a grandmother.”

Eight months ago Bernie and Feimun’s son Jason, 24 joined the family business as a partner and manager. The Lums are looking forward to the next generations.

CPA expands services
Mid-county CPA, Donald Davis.

Want a home cooked meal without having to cook it yourself? Sweet Home on Sandy is the answer. This restaurant, opened in September of this year, offers home cooking and daily breakfast and dinner specials. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, including steaks, pasta, hamburgers, seafood and more. This restaurant also makes a contribution to the community by helping to feed the hungry on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

In addition to this, Sweet Home on Sandy offers a donation center for coats and other clean, good condition clothing to be donated to homeless students attending Parkrose High School.
