The city of Portland hired 70 Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization youths to work in City jobs over the summer. Sixty-nine of those youth gathered to meet City Council members before the July 13 City Council meeting. Three minority youths, Christina Li, Anael Jeannis and Suada Ibrahim, presented statements about working for the city and for the Summer Youth Employment Program funded by the City, operated by IRCO.

Operated by IRCO with the focus on minority youths, the summer youth employment project coordinates recruitment, screening and selection of 70 youths to participate in the city of Portland’s Summer Youth Employment Program. The program provides work skills, training and coordinates work experience placement with the city. In addition, IRCO organizes and supervises youth participation with various construction trades apprenticeship programs including but not limited to the local carpenters, electricians, sheet metal workers, plumbers and construction equipment operators unions.

IRCO’s mission is to assist refugees, immigrants and multi-ethnic communities to develop self-sufficiency and cultural awareness while affirming and preserving each culture within an ever-changing global environment.

For more information regarding the Summer Youth Employment program, please contact Lyn Tan at 503-234-1541.
