Twilight Tuesday at Smith and Bybee Wetlands Natural Area Take a relaxing walk and view wildlife at Smith and Bybee Wetlands Natural Area Tuesdays, Aug. 9 and 23 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. During the summer, dusk is one of the best times to see wildlife. Its about the only time you can see mammals such as beaver, otter, muskrat, raccoon, deer and mink. Birds are also more active at this time of day. Discuss the basics of wildlife watching and identification with Metro naturalist James Davis. Bring binoculars or borrow a pair from Metro. All ages are welcome, but children must be able to be quiet, sneaky and patient. Payment of $5 per adult is required in advance; children are free. Call 503-797-1928 to sign up, the walks are wheelchair accessible. The natural area is located on Marine Drive between the Expo Center and Kelley Point Park. Take I-5 to exit 307. Go west on North Marine Drive for 2.2 miles. Turn left at the large brown and white sign. LIBRARIES Library readies installation of new catalog Multnomah County Librarys catalog is considered the librarys combined brain and heart, keeping track of two million items and circulating them continuously to more than 480,000 library cardholders. The librarys long-planned upgrade to a new electronic catalog is scheduled to be available to library customers Sept.15. Considering the librarys high circulation, preparing for the debut of the new electronic catalog required months of careful planning. To ensure a smooth data migration, all Multnomah County library branches will close Sept. 12 to14. Also closing during this period is the librarys Web site and all book drops. Discover how using Multnomah County Library will save busy educators valuable time on Thursday, August 11 from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Educators will receive a sneak preview of the new catalog system, able to do many things; such as: send e-mail alerts about new items of interest and reminders when to return materials. Educators will learn how to request book collections or get multiple copies of items for students. Educators will also be shown how to access online resources such as online encyclopedias and tutoring, for their students. Books to Connect with Your Curriculum: Are you a Multnomah County educator? Are you tired of using the same books with your classes every year?
