Calendar (continued) ... MEETINGS In your neighborhood There is a group in your area working hard to keep you neighborhood safe, beautiful and livable. These folks have direct access to the powers that be and can get things done. Most of them meet monthly. On Monday, April 18, the Hazelwood Neighborhood Association board will meet at Courtyard at Russellville, 20 S.E. 103rd Ave. beginning at 6:30 p.m. Mill Park Neighborhood Association will hold its monthly general membership meeting at Midland Library, 805 S.E. 122nd Ave. on Tuesday, April 19 at 6:30 p.m. The Board of the Argay Neighborhood Association will meet on Tuesday, April 19 at 7 p.m. at Scarborough Flair, Northeast 131st Avenue and Sandy Boulevard. A general membership meeting of the Parkrose Neighborhood Association will be held at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 11100 N.E. Skidmore St. on Tuesday, April 19 at 7 p.m. Miller Hall at Parkrose United Methodist Church, 11111 N.E. Knott St., is the meeting site for the board meeting of the Parkrose Heights Association of Neighbors on Tuesday, April 19 at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 21 is the date for a general membership meeting of the Glenfair Neighborhood Association in the faculty lounge at Glenfair Elementary School, 15300 N.E. Glisan St. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Russell Neighborhood Association will host its general meeting on Thursday, April 28 at Western States Chiropractic College, in the Hampton Hall Conference Room at 7 p.m. The EPNO office at 735 S.E. 106th Ave. will be the site for the general membership meeting of Woodland Park Neighborhood Association on Thursday, April 28 at 7 p.m. The Lions in Parkrose One of the many active service groups in our area is the Portland Cascade Lions Club. They meet the second Tuesday of each month at Steamers Restaurant and Lounge on Northeast 82nd Avenue and Sandy Boulevard at 6:30 p.m. Join them there for dinner to learn more about the projects they have in the works. Business of parks Zari Santner of Portland Parks & Recreation will speak to members of the Gateway Area Business Association on Thursday, April 14. The meeting will be at J J Norths Grand Buffet, 10520 N.E. Halsey St., at 11:45 a.m. Making city hall work for you A workshop for Portland neighborhood leaders titled Making City Hall Work For You will be held Wednesday, April 20. Participants will learn how to access city services and advocate for their community needs. The workshop will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Multnomah Arts Center, 7688 S.W. Capitol Highway, in the Capitol Room in the Senior Center. The city of Portland Office of Neighborhood Involvement and Southwest Neighborhoods, Inc. are sponsors. Participants will learn how to approach and to work with city bureau staff, boards and commissions, and City Council. Leaders will learn how to prepare testimony before City Council or committee hearings and receive tips on lobbying elected officials at city, state and federal levels. Leaders will share their experiences on what has worked and hasnt worked in advocating for issues in their neighborhood and accessing city services. The training will provide knowledge of available resources through the district coalitions and the Office of Neighborhood Involvement to assist with their advocacy efforts. The workshop is designed for volunteers of neighborhood associations and other community organizations working on city related issues. It is open to all individuals interested in taking a leadership role in their neighborhood organizations and is being offered free of charge. A bit of history Members of the Parkrose Business Association will hear from Barbara Allen of the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial in Oregon at the general membership meeting set for Thursday, April 21 at Steamers Restaurant and Lounge, 8303 N.E. Sandy Blvd. The traditional member moment will feature Margaret Erikson and Bob Hodges, owners of Beale Street NW. The meeting will begin at 11:30 a.m.; the $10 buffet includes dessert and gratuity. Organizing BIG neighborhood events A workshop for Portland neighborhood activists called Organizing BIG neighborhood events will be held Thursday, April 28. Participants will learn helpful tips for planning special events for their neighborhood associations or other small community-based groups. The workshop will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Historic Kenton Firehouse, 8105 N. Brandon St. The event is co-sponsored by the city of Portland Office of Neighborhood Involvement and North Portland Neighborhood Services. Past and current neighborhood leaders will share their experiences on what has worked and hasnt worked in organizing special events. Participants will review creating an event plan including event budgets and timelines. Leaders will share tips on recruiting volunteers, delegating tasks and outreach ideas to get people to the event. Resource ideas will be listed from the city and other community organizations to assist with funding and other logistical support. Special events can be a great opportunity to engage neighbors in the neighborhood association, says Tom Griffin-Valade, director of the North Portland Neighborhood Services. Whether its a tree planting, neighborhood clean-up or block party these are also opportunities for new members to learn organizing and leadership skills while having fun. This event is free and open to the public. FUNDRAISERS Plant sale On Saturday, April 16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Leach Garden Friends will host its annual Spring Plant Sale. Spring is the perfect time to plant perennials in your garden. Over 30 tables of unusual shrubs, perennials and Northwest native plants will be offered by specialty nurseries as well as plants propagated from the Leach collection. You will also find garden art, books and items from the Leach Gift Shop. The sale will take place at the Floyd Light Middle School, Southeast 108th Avenue and Washington Street. The proceeds from the sale go toward the care and ongoing maintenance of Leach Botanical Garden, Portlands only public botanical garden. Admission is free. Hula the night away The 14th Annual Central East Rotary Auction will be held Saturday, April 16, at the St. George Hall, 2101 N.E. 162nd Ave., at 6 p.m. Enjoy an Evening in Paradise with a luau dinner, live Polynesian revue, and a silent and an oral auction. Hawaiian or casual attire only. Proceeds from the auction provide funds for 12 college scholarships that are awarded to David Douglas, Parkrose and Reynolds school district graduates each year.
