Calling all music lovers
The Parkrose High Jazz Band under the direction of Randy McCray and the Debonaires, directed by Lesley Bossert will perform an evening of jazz on Thursday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. in the high school theater, 12003 N.E. Shaver St. On Wednesday, Oct. 28 the entire choral department will present its annual Getting Our Feet Wet concert, also at 7 p.m. and also in the theater.

Architectural forms and everyday images are deconstructed
When the average person sees a chocolate bar, he craves a sweet; when artist David Drake sees a chocolate bar, he sees an iconic image that could be incorporated into a work of art. “Construct,” Drake's upcoming art exhibit at Mt. Hood Community College, will explore everyday forms such as the house, a chocolate bar and architectural icons with a sense of satirical science and playful curiosity.

Drake is a multimedia artist whose sculptures and conceptual installations are a response to familiar images and the constantly evolving design industry. His influences stem from the nostalgic furniture designs of his childhood, our mass-produced culture, architectural design and the 1960's minimalist movement.

“I'm interested in the theatrical potential of objects in space: ways in which groupings of vaguely familiar objects are given meaning by an observer and assembled into visual statements or propositions,” Drake said. “I've appropriated forms from past and present design cultures, while radically altering their contexts.”

“Construct” will be displayed in the MHCC Visual Arts Gallery from now through Friday, Oct. 23. A public reception will be held Thursday, Oct. 1 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The MHCC Visual Arts Gallery is located on the Gresham campus, 26000 S.E. Stark St. It is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed on weekends and holidays.

For more information, contact Nathan Orosco, visual arts instructor and gallery coordinator, at 503-491-6968.

Theater season begins
Parkrose High School theater students will present Laurence Boswell's romantic telling of “Beauty and the Beast” on Nov. 13, 19 and 20 at 7 p.m., and on Nov. 14 at 2 p.m. in the theater at 12003 N.E. Shaver St. Tickets will be $8 and can be purchased online at www.seatyourself.biz/parkrose or at the door. If you have questions please call 503-408-2718.
