CHURCHES
Mother’s Day brunch
A very special brunch buffet is planned on Sunday, May 9, as part of the annual Mother’s Day Celebration at The Grotto. With the gardens in glorious spring bloom and an elegant buffet brunch in an incredibly beautiful setting, The Grotto offers a wonderfully peaceful way to enjoy Mother’s Day.

The event will held in The Grotto’s banquet facility on the lower level of the visitor complex. Two seating times are available - 11 to 11:30 a.m. and 1:15 to 1:45 p.m. Cost is $18.50 per person, children 5 and younger are free. Tickets must be purchased by May 5 and space is limited. Tickets are available at The Grotto, Northeast 85th Avenue and Sandy Boulevard, or by phone at 503-254-7371

There will be a special Mother’s Day Mass honoring all mothers at noon outdoors at Our Lady’s Grotto in the central plaza, or in the Chapel of Mary, should it rain.

Fifty years and counting
The existence of Woodland Park Baptist Church started from a very small seed. The church began life as a mission station at Northeast Halsey and 114th Avenue. A forty foot long shiny, aluminum, Trailer Chapel opened its doors to the neighborhood on July 19, 1953. Those in attendance heard, Rev. Elwood Marvin, preach a sermon entitled, “In the Beginning”.

A sense of fellowship developed, then a vision caught hold as the challenge of this ministry started on the road to reality with plans drawn up for a building. The church was incorporated in May 1954 under the same name it carries today. Four months later in September of 1953 a groundbreaking service was held. The work continued throughout the winter. The enthusiasm grew by leaps and bounds, so much so that even though the sanctuary was not finished the people held an Easter Service of Worship there. The months flew by with many volunteer hours of labor using many materials that were donated to the church. In November 1955, a Charter Service took place. Thirteen Baptisms were performed on that day. A few of the original charter members survive and remain members to this day.

Under the leadership of eight full time pastors and a few interim pastors over the past five decades, the church has ministered to the needs of many people. Upgrading of the facilities for Christian Education activities has enabled the church to better serve young people, as well as the Women’s Missionary Society and the Men’s Fellowship. Two people, encouraged by this church, did volunteer lay missionary work in Haiti and for a Haitian Baptist Church in the Dominican Republic. Under the leadership of Pastor John Mendez the young people of the church did mission fieldwork in New Mexico, Montana and in Mexico. Vacation Bible School has also been an important work of the church.

From Friday, May 14 through Sunday, May 16, the church community will gather in celebration of the past 50 years. This celebration will provide a time for renewing friendships and remembering the role of our church in our lives. Friday evening begins at 7 p.m. The evening will be filled with music and fellowship. Saturday evening there will be a banquet served in Marvin Hall. The worship on Sunday, will be highlighted with an special guest speaker, David Hunt. Hunt is the immediate past president of America Baptist Churches/USA. Everyone is invited to be join the congregation at 11 a.m. on Sunday morning.

Woodland Park Baptist Church offers Sunday School each Sunday at 9:45 a.m., Worship services on Sundays at 11 a.m. and your activities each Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Rummage sale
Our Savior Lutheran Church, 11100 N.E. Skidmore St. invites the community to a rummage sale on Friday, May 21 and Saturday, May 22 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

They promise lots of items for sale with great prices and good variety. Coffee, hotdogs, donuts, and pop will be offered for sale as you browse.

Donated items will accepted at the church between the hours of 9 a.m.. and noon, Monday through Friday up until the day of the sale.

Senior directed one-act plays
Six seniors in the David Douglas High School Drama department have been selected to direct a one-act play to be performed at Horner Performing Arts Center, 1400 S.E.130th Ave on Wednesday, May 5 through Saturday, May 8. Each performance will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Comedy presentation
The Portland Christian High School Theatre Department is presenting their spring comedy, “PLAY ON!” The show will run at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 6 through Saturday, May 8.

The play tells the story of a local community theatre group gearing up to do the world premiere of a murder mystery written by a local writer. Things start going wrong from the very beginning and the hilarity continues all the way into their disastrous opening night.

Local director Kelley Marchant, marking her 45th directorial project, directs the play. The cast is made up of sixteen Portland Christian Jr. High and High School students. Seniors Joey Patten and Matt Arnone lead the cast along with junior Jessica Gadbaugh, sophomores Julie Messinger, Grant Rehnberg and Maryn Abbate. Aeby Zoller, a freshman, also makes a debut in a leading role.

This production was honored with a First Place award at the State Thespian Conference for Grant Rehnberg’s set design.

One-act play festival
The Parkrose High School, or PHS, Drama Department has announced its spring presentation: The One-Act Play Festival. The dates and times are Wednesday, May 12 through Friday, May 14 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, May 15 at 2 p.m. There will be three one-act plays presented this year.

The first, directed by Theatre teacher Justin Lindemann, is “Mere Mortals” by David Ives. It is a short comic play about three men working at a construction site (all played by women) who one by one reveal their secret pasts.

The second, directed by senior Alec Wilson, is Steve Martin’s “Picasso at the Lapin Agile.” Albert Einstein, Pablo Picasso, and Elvis Presley walk into a bar. Sounds like the start of a joke, but it’s the premise of this play about the 20th Century. Please note that this play contains language and themes that may not be appropriate for children under 13.

The final piece is an original one-act entitled “Warp Speed, Mr. Worf” presented by La Resistance Theatre. The play was penned by Rebecca Martin and is directed by Amanda James. A high school student obsessed with “Star Trek” is forced to choose between obeying his stepfather’s rules or meeting his hero, Lieutenant Worf, at a convention. It is a touching and lighthearted look into the lives of teenagers who aren’t in with the “cool kids.”

Ticket prices are $3.00 for children, students and senior citizens, $5.00 for adults. Tickets are available at the high school box office located at 12003 N.E. FUND RAISERS
Grads to party

As the date for the annual Senior All-night Party at Parkrose High School, or PHS, rapidly approaches, parents of the graduating class are busy raising money for the event.

For pastry lovers, the group will be selling Krispy Kreme donuts at Wal-Mart, 23500 N.E. Sandy Blvd, on Saturday, May 1, 15 and 22 from 8:30 a.m. until they sell out.

The committee will also welcome donated items that are appropriate as door prizes or gifts for the seniors on their big night. Send or drop off donations to Parkrose High School, 12003 N.E. Shaver, Portland, OR 97220, Attn: Senior All Night Party.

Spring plant sale
Get prepared for Mother’s Day with the help of the Mt. Hood Community College, or MHCC, horticulture program. The annual Spring Plant Sale is a three-day event featuring beautiful flower baskets and a broad assortment of annuals and perennials that make perfect Mother’s Day gifts.

The sale runs Thursday, May 6 and Friday, May 7 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday, May 8 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The sale will take place at the MHCC Horticulture/Fisheries building, north campus, at 26000 S.E. Stark St., in Gresham.
