Oregon College of Oriental Medicine receives $108,000 grant from M. J. Murdock Trust
The M. J. Murdock Charitable Trust has awarded the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine (OCOM) a $108,000 grant to help fund development of the college’s new clinical doctoral program in acupuncture and Oriental medicine. Currently acupuncture and Oriental medicine colleges in the U.S. train general practitioners at the master’s degree level. The new doctoral program, the first accredited clinical doctoral program in the country, will provide advanced knowledge, clinical skills, specialization training and leadership capability in the field of acupuncture and Oriental medicine.

“We are delighted that the Murdock Charitable Trust is so generously supporting our clinical doctoral program in acupuncture and Oriental medicine,” said OCOM president Elizabeth A. Goldblatt, Ph.D., M.P.A./H.A. “This new clinical doctoral program will allow us to help strengthen the field of acupuncture and Oriental medicine in the U.S. by training clinical researchers, educators, clinic supervisors, scholars, and specialists.”

OCOM’s doctoral program provides an intensive, two-year course of study for experienced licensed acupuncturists. The program consists of on-campus modules in specific areas of concentration, clinical studies including Western and Eastern perspectives and methodologies, education in research and research design, and specialized clinical study and practice in China. The Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM) and the Oregon Department of Education both approved the program in 2002.

While the master’s degree will remain entry level to the profession, the addition of a doctoral program provides optional advanced training for experienced practitioners. “The initial classes beginning in July 2003 will be comprised of OCOM faculty and other experienced practitioners seeking professional specialization. As a result, those first graduates will be able to immediately share their expertise with their students, patients, and colleagues,” said Dr. Goldblatt.

The M. J. Murdock Charitable Trust’s mission is to enrich the quality of life in the Pacific Northwest by providing grants to organizations that seek to strengthen the region’s educational and cultural base in creative and sustainable ways.

The Oregon College of Oriental Medicine, 10541 S.E. Cherry Blossom Drive, 503- 253-3443, is a nationally accredited four-year college, founded in 1983, which trains master’s degree students in acupuncture and Oriental medicine. The college also operates a teaching clinic with a Faculty Practice and an Intern Clinic, which offers affordable health care to people throughout the metropolitan area.
