New speakers bureau program announced The Portland Development Commission has launched a new Speakers Bureau Program to increase its involvement with local communities, businesses and service organizations. This is a brand new opportunity to bring an engaging, fact-filled and educational presentation to your next meeting. These presentations and group discussions will help you and everyone in your group better understand what PDC does as the Citys urban renewal agency to improve livability in your city and how you can work with PDC to bring those benefits to your neighborhood, business district or community. The goal of the PDC Speakers Bureau Program is to provide residents, business and property owners and other community members information about urban renewal funding, history, projects and programs. With this information in hand, citizens will have a better understanding of how they can work with PDC to improve their homes, neighborhoods, businesses and the City. The Speakers Bureau Program offers five different topics ranging from a fun look-back on Portlands history to new business opportunities for your neighborhood. Each presentation runs a total of about 20 to 30 minutes and follows with a 10 to 15-minute question and answer session. PDC presenters can be scheduled for lunch hours, day or evening meetings, and also on the weekends. So wherever your interest lies, whether it is improving your business or making your neighborhood a better place to live, PDC wants to come to your next meeting. To schedule a presentation, call 503-823-9306 to schedule or complete the online speaker request form at www.pdc.us/speakersbureau. Distinguished teachers celebrated Faculty and students of Mt. Hood Community College have selected three outstanding instructors to receive the annual Distinguished Teaching Awards. Lidia Yuknavitch, Ellen White and Walter Wally Shriner will each be honored at the 2005 commencement ceremony for their hard work and dedication to the college, both in and outside the classroom. Yuknavitch has been with MHCC for four years, teaching literature and composition. In that time, she has managed to generate quite a following for herself. Each term, her classes fill quickly, and students rarely drop. A student of Yuknavitchs said, Lidia drew us out, and made it so we wanted to learn more. When she received her award, Yuknavitch beamed, I was so moved, this is really meaningful. White has been active in Early Childhood Education for over 20 years. As an instructor of ECE classes, she allows her wisdom and experience in the field do the talking. She has a wide range of personal experiences, said a MHCC student. I could listen to Ellen lecture for eight hours straight. White received the news she had been selected to receive an award with amazement. I was so surprised, she said. Its wonderful. Shriners packed classroom bustled with congratulations and applause when the MHCC science instructor received notice that he too had been selected to receive the Distinguished Teaching award. Wally, as many know him, constantly gives extra support to his students inside and outside of classes, sacrificing his personal time, wrote two students in Shriners Birds: Biology and Techniques class. What weve learned from him is that with confidence and passion, we cannot fail. MHCC dean honored by OHSU Paula Gubrud-Howe, dean of Nursing and Allied Health at Mt.
