Meet your elected city officials Visit Portland's elected officials at Portland City Hall, 1221 S.W. 4th Ave. Increase your knowledge and perspective about our local government in this exchange of ideas. Hear their perspective about public affairs and talk with them about your individual and citywide issues. Portland has a national reputation for open and responsive government. This will be a great opportunity to learn more about it through this enlightening and enjoyable forum. The forums will be held each Friday in June from noon until 1 p.m. Bring a lunch if you like. Auditor Gary Blackmer will be on hand on June 3, Commissioner Randy Leonard on June 10, Commissioner Dan Saltzman on June 17 and Commissioner Erik Sten on June 24. These meetings are free and open to the public. OASIS, a national educational organization dedicated to enriching the lives of mature adults by offering a variety of programs and opportunities for seniors to continue their personal growth and provide service to their community is the sponsor. Garden offers special classes for plant lovers As the mission statement reads, "Leach Botanical Garden is a public garden dedicated to the exhibition and botanical study of plants of the Pacific Northwest." Now part of the Portland parks system, the garden staff arranges for unique and informative classes throughout the year. Stefan Bump, horticulturist with Portland Parks & Recreation will teach Weed Identification class on Tuesday, June 7 from 7 to 8 p.m. and Plant Identification and History class on Tuesday, Aug. 2 from 7 to 8 p.m. There is a $12 fee for members, $15 for non-members. On Saturday, June 11, an expert will be on hand to teach how to gather, store, press and use your favorite blossoms year around. The class will begin at 10 a.m. and last until noon. Members pay $17. Non-members pay $20, materials included. Stefan Bump will return on Tuesday, Oct. 4 from 7 to 8 p.m. to introduce you to plants for fall and winter interest. Classical music on a spring evening presented Fans of popular and light classical orchestral selections should mark Friday, June 10 on their calendars now. Property Maintenance Code the discussion topic Each month the city of Portland Bureau of Development Services offers a free Lunch and Learn Brown Bag Session as part of an ongoing public education effort. On Friday, June 10, from noon to 1:30 p.m. the discussion to will focus on the neighborhood inspections program and will feature: The history and mission of Portland's Property Maintenance Code Program. Neighborhood inspections overview to include everything from junk cars to dry rot. Understanding the neighborhood inspections process. How and when the city steps in. Community partners working together. Described as a sticks and carrots approach. Question and answer session with the city neighborhood inspections team. Bring a lunch to the 1900 S.W. 4th Avenue Building Second Floor Conference Room 2500-A and settle in for an informative mid-day break. Learn about clematis from local expert Portland's own clematis expert, Linda Beutler, will talk about her latest book, "Gardening with Clematis". The event will take place at Leach Botanical Garden, 6704 S.E. 122nd Ave. in the Manor House on Saturday, June 11 at 11 a.m. Copies of her book will be available. Well field bicycle tour date set Join the Columbia Slough Watershed Council and the City of Portland, Bureau of Water Works for a free bicycle riding tour through Portland's Groundwater Protection Area Saturday, June 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Located along the Columbia River, this well field is capable of producing close to 100 million gallons per day and is used as a supplemental water supply during the summer demand season. At several stops along the ride, groundwater specialist Randy Albright will explain the mysteries of groundwater, discuss how this season's below normal rainfall may impact our water supply and teach you how to protect our important groundwater resources. Bring your bike, helmet, water, lunch, and dress for the weather. The ride is approximately 16 miles over flat terrain, at a slow to moderate pace. It is suitable for beginning and intermediate riders, ages 12 and up. Helmets and advance registration are required. Space is limited to 30 riders so register early. The ride will begin and end at the Parkrose Transit Center parking lot at the MAX Red Line stop, 9481 N.E. Free seminars on Oriental Medicine offered The Oregon College of Oriental Medicine is sponsoring two free Saturday seminars for the public on June 11 and June 18. The seminars will provide information about how to use different modalities of traditional Chinese medicine to get well and stay healthy. These medical techniques, developed over centuries in China, can be helpful in easing stress, tension and other ailments of modern life. Each Saturday seminar begins at 10 a.m. and lasts for two hours. The seminar on June 11 will focus on acupuncture and Chinese medicinal herbs. Sample acupuncture treatments will be offered. Herbal teas will be available for tasting. On June 18 there will be a presentation on Oriental massage and qigong (chee-gong). Attendees will learn how massage and simple meditative exercise can reduce stress and ease aches and pains. Seminars are free, but space is limited. To reserve your place, call 503-253-3443, ext.550. The seminars will be held at the OCOM Acupuncture and Herbal Clinic, 10541 S.E. Cherry Blossom Drive, on the campus of the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine in East Portland near Mall 205. Pub's annual Cruise-In date set Rock and roll music, prizes and of course, lots of classic cars will be found at the Wooden Chicken Pub and Uncle Vinny's Pizza Cruise In on Saturday, July 9. The Rose City Classics car club sponsors this event. Lovers of 1955-1957 Chevrolets established the club in 1981. There will of course be lots of Chevy cars and trucks on display, but other area clubs will bring a variety of makes and models ranging from the early Ford Model T's up to many of the hot cars of the 60's and 70's.
