Awards celebrated best neighbor, student, athlete (continued)

In the Businessperson of the Year category, the sponsor was the Parkrose Business Association. Certificate winners were Dixie Ann Winter of Dixie’s Gifts and Golden Girls Hair Salon, and Tony Bosboom of Fabric Depot. The plaque winner was Judith Huck of Classique Floors.

Volunteer of the Year, sponsored by Unitus Community Credit Union, saw Mark Gardner, Allison Newman-Woods, Jim Lipscomb, Amy Salvador and Pete Schmidt as certificate winners. The plaque winner was Rod Martin.

Leadership of the Year award, sponsored by the Gateway Area Business Association, saw John Di Pasquale and Bobbie Aden as certificate winners. Plaque winner was Arlene Kimura.

For the Educator of the Year, the sponsor was the Parkrose School District. Certificate winners were Caysie Torrey, Lesley McKinnon and Linda Owasaki. The plaque winner was Jeff Rose.
For the Cook of the Year category, the sponsor was Nick Rossi of Hasson Realtors. Certificate winners were Cleary’s Restaurant’s Edward Linares, Meals on Wheels volunteer Ted Tran and New-Life Eastminster Presbyterian Church’s Rev. Bill Taylor. The Parkrose Lions Club won the plaque for Cook of the Year.

For the Neighborhood Beautification Award, the sponsor was Castlegate Realty; certificate winners were Ross Monn and Janelle Singleton. Plaque winners were Clare and Sharon Mershon.
For the Boss of the Year award, the sponsor was Oregon Baptist Retirement Homes. Certificate winners were Bruce Altizer of Postal Annex, and Steve Williams of the Johnson Assisted Living Center at Oregon Baptist Retirement Homes. The plaque winner was the superintendent of Parkrose School District, Michael Taylor.

Postal Annex sponsored the Environmental Preservation Award. Certificate winners were Ross Monn, and Clare and Sharon Mershon. The plaque winner was Linda Robinson.

The Neighbor of the Year category was sponsored by Bob Brown Tire Center. Certificate winners were Elizabeth Webber and Alesia Reece. The plaque winner was Bonny McKnight.

The Mid-county Memo Community Awards Committee, an awards selection committee made up of a cross section of Mid-County business and community leaders, were SnowCap Executive Director Judy Alley; the former pastor at Parkrose Community United Church of Christ, Charlie Ross; East Portland Neighborhood Office Coordinator Richard Bixby; Rev. Bill Taylor of New Life-Eastminster Presbyterian Church; and Rod Martin, chairman of the Parkrose School District board of directors.

This was the seventh time the event had been held. It was also held in 1988, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1994 and 2000.
