THE MID-COUNTY MEMO

Women in the Mid-County area now have the opportunity to get a thorough workout designed especially for them. Curves for Women exercise and weight loss centers are among the fastest growing exercise franchises in America, and the reason is clear. Curves employs a breakthrough in exercise technology to provide a full cardiovascular and strength workout in just 30 minutes.

The Curves circuit is a system of exercise that alternates hydraulic resistance machines with aerobic recovery stations. As participants move around the circuit, listening to music and being motivated by an instructor, they perform both a cardiovascular and strength training workout at the same time. The session winds down with a stretching routine. This thirty-minute workout burns as many as five hundred calories. Because the participants are moving fluid rather than weights, this workout is completely safe for any age or condition, which sets it apart.

Gateway Curves owner Diane Ray says, “When you diet alone, 40% of the weight you lose is muscle. Muscles are the engines of our bodies and they require fuel. If you drastically lower your body’s energy needs each time you diet, you will always gain your weight back. The key to permanent results is lean muscle. When a woman loses twenty pounds with us, it is predominantly body fat. Strength training protects and increases lean tissue while raising metabolism.”

Curves on-sight weight-loss guidance program is the first international program to blend exercise and diet. Simply dieting to lose weight does not work for most people. You must also exercise for lasting results. Curves for Women meets both needs in time-efficient, fun circuit of exercises Ray says, “We’re winning the weight-loss war. A thirty-minute total workout, in a female friendly environment, complete weight-loss guidance, makes health and fitness an achievable goal. Our low $29 monthly fee makes it a great value.”

She speaks from experience. At first ambivalent about her husband’s suggestion of opening a franchise, she became enthusiastic after visiting a Washington Curves location that a friend had joined. She could do the exercise, which was no small accomplishment. A nerve disease in her feet had prevented her from any heavy activity for many years. “I could do this, and I had fun doing it!” says Ray. The workout, while effective, is easy to do. The Gateway location’s oldest client is 81 years old and suffers from many health problems, including degenerative bone problems, and says the exercise makes her feel better.

Ray is very enthusiastic about her Gateway area location. “It was like coming home. My son was born in Woodland Park Hospital, my father lived off Northeast 153rd Avenue and Halsey Street and my sister went to Reynolds High School. My son is now married and lives on Northeast Halsey Street.”
