Memo Calendar (continued) ... David Douglas to perform The David Douglas High School Performing Arts Department proudly presents Thoroughly Modern Millie, a hilarious look at 1920s New York. The performance dates are Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Dec. 3 to 5, and Dec. 10 to 12 at 7:30 p.m. There is one 2:30 p.m. matinee performance on Sunday, Dec. 6th. Create a healthy, habitat-filled landscape Fall naturescaping and rain garden workshops are just beginning. East Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District offers free naturescaping and rain garden workshops that highlight how to reduce stormwater runoff, create wildlife habitat and contribute to healthier local streams. Rain Gardens 101: Rain gardens are a great way to add beautiful landscaping to your yard and protect overloaded urban streams at the same time. Learn the how-tos of constructing your own rain garden and the critical role rain gardens can play in urban stream restoration. You will learn how to assess your site to determine the best location and size, calculate impervious surfaces, determine soil suitability, choose appropriate plants and steps for maintaining your new rain garden. You will also bring home a rain garden packet that shows all the steps. Naturescaping is the practice of designing a landscape so that it reduces water use, decreases pollution, provides beautiful habitat for birds and wildlife, and also saves you time, money and energy. Explore the core concepts of naturescaping at this introductory workshop. Participants get professional landscape design and natural gardening tips, enjoy a field trip to a nearby naturescaped garden, and receive a comprehensive workbook and native plant to help get started. Even if you decide to enlist the help of a landscaper or designer with your project, you'll have the framework to make decisions and communicate your desires to your contractor.
