Crime Prevention Program surveys Neighborhood Watches

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

For nearly 30 years Neighborhood Watch has been a cornerstone of Portland’s crime prevention efforts. neighborhood Watches are groups of neighbors working together to improve public safety, building community on their block, in their neighborhood.

Neighborhood Watch participants get to know their neighbors, learn crime prevention techniques, and together, plan projects, such as: eradicate drug houses, have a neighborhood garage sale, help maintain yards of neighbors unable to.

The City of Portland’s Crime Prevention Program administers Neighborhood Watch for Portland. Every few years, staff conducts a survey, updating their information.  Thie survey will be conducted this summer, from mid-June to late July.

Portland Parks Board Seeks Three New Members

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

We received a public service announcement (below)  from Portland Parks &Recreation. If you can not serve,  maybe you know someone that might be interested.

Portland Parks & Recreation’s Parks Board is currently recruiting one new member to fill an immediate vacancy and two additional members to fill vacancies that will become open when the terms of current Board members expire this coming fall.

Formed by city ordinance in 2001, the Parks Board is a 13-member, non-administrative board whose role is advisory to the PP&R Director, the Commissioner of Parks, and Portland’s City Council. The volunteer Board serves as an advocate for parks and recreation in city infrastructure, provides a forum for public involvement and decision making about major park policy issues, and brings a citywide and long-term perspective to neighborhood-based issues.

Free money leads to sloppy stewardship

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

We subscribe to Portland Online, an information service run by the city that notifies you, if you subscribe, of various events and happeningings in the city.

Specifically, of course, we receive notice of events and happenings in the Mid-county area.

So, the other day we receive an e-mail from Portland Online informing us of the Parkrose Community Fair happening on Saturday, September 20.

Parkrose Community Fair? Wasn’t this an event held at Parkrose High School at the end of the regular school year?
It has moved, apparently, to September and will be held in the parking lot at Eastminster Church on Northeast Halsey Street at 125th Avenue in east Portland.

IRCO Job fair brings opportunity to young workers

Friday, March 31st, 2006

In an economy where young people find it difficult to get employment, three agencies teamed up last month to present their annual Youth Job Fair.

Following the success of last year’s event, the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization again hosted the event, working with SE Works, a community-based workforce development organization again, organizing and presenting the job fair.

Thirty employers were on hand to speak not only about immediate summer job openings, but to also assist young job seekers looking at long-term career possibilities. Representatives from the City of Portland, Portland Parks & Recreation, Nike, Portland General Electric, and Safeway, interviewed for positions currently available, as well as spoke candidly about how to shine in job interviews.
