Portland Police Bureau redistricting effort draws east Portland ire
Public meetings are being planned to let citizens in on the Portland Police Bureau’s plans for redistricting, and that includes east Portland’s East Precinct.
Neighbors with the Madison South Neighborhood Association have been given some advanced notice concerning the changes, and apparently their portion of east Portland will be redistricted – out of the East Precinct. Some of those members are unhappy with the plans.
The first public meeting of city officials and the PPB for citizens to view proposed boundary changes, learn about redistricting recommendations and provide feedback regarding changes to the PPB East Precinct will be held Tuesday, Jan. 15, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Banfield Corporate Office, 8000 N.E. Tillamook St.
A second meeting is set for Tuesday, Feb. 26, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., also at the Banfield Corporate Office.
Other PPB precincts – including Southeast, Northeast, North and Central – will also hold public meetings, at other times and other locations.
The Memo received an informative flyer from Madison South Neighborhood Association, and would like to pass that information to our readers.
In the flyer, the association said that PPB “Chief Rosie Sizer is strongly considering reorganizing precinct boundaries that would remove Madison South and its people from East Precinct.” The flyer went on to say that, “Programs, activities and volunteer support given by Madison South neighbors would no longer be a part of East Precinct!”
The flyer stated “Madison South Neighborhood Association has been a part of East Precinct since its inception. Many members of Madison South are actively involved not only in their own neighborhood, but all support your neighborhood through their work with East Precinct.”
Then the flyer listed the names and activities of several Madison South members, including Ruth Hander, Palmer Moore, Geneva McArtor and Dave Smith, all of whom, among many others, volunteer their time to give support to the East Precinct’s role to protect and serve the citizens of east Portland.
Finally, the flyer urges local citizens to attend the meeting on Jan. 15 and “share your opinions about the value of keeping Madison South in East Precinct!”
