Park Rangers ready to patrol this summer
Mark Warrington, Portland Parks & Recreation security coordinator sent us a note about the Park Rangers program. It follows:
“PP&R Park Rangers have begun their twelfth year of seasonal operations. Each year the positive reputation of Park Rangers grows among government and community-based partners as well as the public.
“Park Ranger Supervisor Kurt Nelson leads the PP&R Ranger program. He has been busy revising Ranger procedures, conducting training and getting equipment ready for the busy season. Last week, the Park Ranger Training Academy graduated nine new Rangers who will be paired in teams with ten returning veteran Rangers.
“All summer long the PP&R Rangers provide services throughout the entire parks system. Their job includes city-wide patrol of parks, response to “calls for service” and special enforcement missions to deal with specific problems.
“The most common issues they deal with involve dogs-in-parks rules, the use of alcohol in parks, unlawful camping and other park misuse. In addition, Rangers meet with park users and partners to solve problems, support special events, train PP&R employees and volunteers, and represented PP&R in many different areas.
“This year Ranger teams will be assigned to PP&R service zones so they can get to know PP&R staff better and facilitate a team response to dealing with issues.
“To contact the PP&R Rangers call 503-823-1637 or by pager: 503-942-3047.”
