Kunz selected by Mets in baseball draft

The New York Mets used its first pick in this year’s major league baseball draft to select Eddie Kunz, a 2004 Parkrose High graduate. The hard throwing right-handed pitcher was the 42nd player taken over all.

Kunz played for Parkrose Little League as a youngster and was part of the Parkrose High baseball team that were co-champions of the Mt. Hood Conference. He also played football and basketball as a Bronco.

For the last three seasons Kunz has been a member of the nationally ranked Oregon State Beaver baseball team. As a middle relief pitcher last season, he helped the Beavers claim the NCAA national championship banner.

This season, Kunz serves as the team’s closer, a relief pitcher who tries to get the final out or outs in a game. (A closer is the team’s most reliable pitcher; he almost never pitches without a lead or for more than one inning.)

The Beavers have been working hard all season to be one of the eight teams to return to Omaha, Nebraska (their third consecutive appearance at this double elimination tournament) to defend their national title.

Eddie is the son of Ray and Sue Kunz of Parkrose.
