Editor trusts Everist Bros. for car maintenance

For those of us who have to use our automobiles, a question sometimes arises: Who can I trust to maintain and repair my car?

For me, Rich Riegel, it’s been a challenge.

Finding someone you trust is daunting. I know that many women feel intimated by automobile mechanics, thinking that some women’s lack of knowledge about auto mechanics make them easy prey for unscrupulous auto shops. I’d like to say, don’t feel like the Lone Ranger, some of us guys get taken in when the mechanic says something like, “You’ll have to replace your Johnson Rod,” which is a line from a “Seinfeld” television show episode. There is, of course, no such thing as a Johnson Rod, but how are we to know?

That’s why I’d like to tell Memo readers about David Everist at Everist Bros. Inc. at 7305 N.E. Fremont St.

Let me first admit that David has been an advertiser in the past, inserting a flyers on his business in a handful of our newspapers. Let’s just say he dipped his toe into the advertising waters, but hasn’t been a major advertiser.

I discovered Everist Bros., in east Portland, maybe a dozen years ago. To be honest, he’s located quite a distance from my home, but distance isn’t important, it’s the service.

I could go over a grocery list of different times David and his staff have come to my rescue, but one time was particularly telling.

I had this nagging noise coming from the motor after an engine swap, a swap accomplished by the original auto dealership. The dealership’s big, fancy garage out on Canyon Road couldn’t find the problem. I had to learn to live with the problem, they said.

Well, one day I turned in my car into Everist Bros. for some routine maintenance. When I got the car back in a couple of days, the nagging noise was gone. I hadn?t even mentioned it to Everist Bros.

I asked David about it, and he said his mechanics noticed the noise and took care of it. No charge, he said. I was amazed.

Let me just tell readers that Everist Bros. generally does charge for service, so it’s no free ride. Taking care of today’s modern flivvers takes computers and complicated electronic analysis. But Everist Bros. does the job right, the first time.

I’d like to add Everist Bros. has been around since 1926 as a family-owned business. It’s one of the oldest auto shops in Portland. But as important as its history is what it does today.

Check ‘em out. Call 503-282-3241 and tell ‘em Rich from the Memo said to call. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
