Crossroads Christian School in east Portland starts children’s choir

Crossroads Christian School at 2505 N.E. 102nd Ave. is starting a community children’s choir to be called Crossroads Christian Children’s Choir. Although auditions are required for admittance, the choir is open to all children from the community, not just Crossroads Christian School students. It is meant for grades 3 through 8. The cost to join is $75.

The audition date is Thursday, Jan. 10, from 4 to 5:15 p.m. Rehearsals are set from Thursday, Jan. 17 through March 20, from 4 to 5:15 p.m. Performance dates will be announced; stay tuned to the Memo for updates.

Michael Lukman, the music teacher at Crossroads Christian School, told the Memo that this is the beginning of a choir committed to perform a variety of music, from classical and gospel to contemporary, all at an expected high level of excellence.

Students will learn basic vocal technique foundational to any style of singing, Lukman said. Students will be trained to sing in a healthy way appropriate to his or her vocal development. Every student is expected to perform at a church or school setting at the end of the term.

Lukman is also choir director at Multnomah Presbyterian Church, coming to Crossroads Christian School with 10 years of experience as choir conductor for school and church choirs at all age levels in Singapore, Indonesia, India and the U.S.
