I for one am glad they closed, I went one day around valentines day for lunch and received the worst service I have ever had at a restaurant and this was before the meal. Our party left and went across the street to the Gateway Breakfast House and had wonderful service and a great meal.

This is all so tragic and disgusting. Proving way beyond any shadow of a doubt that talent and skill and common decency do not easily pass down three generations of the Yaw family.
This loud clown borrowed approximately $820K from the old US Bank in the early Eighties and by the end of the decade had paid it down to around $810K! And I'm just remembering what I read at the time in the Oregonian. Appalling lack of financial/managerial skill!
The "Fern" Bar and the various satellite restaurants were all foolish and poorly managed ventures that should have been enough to keep this schmuck out of the business Portland scene in any form other than a bad memory. But no! He was still able to scam and BS to death lots more nostalgic types. How sad.
Me too on a few visits... But likely no more.
Nicely researched piece.
Thanks!

I tried to warn the people at the Oregonian about Steve Yaw months before this new place was up and running. I tried to contact Pepsi, Budweiser, the construction co and other purveyers that they would not get paid but would be promised everything. Nobody would listen, so I guess they might have gotten what they deserved

Sleezy people like Steve Yaw will never change because he has gotten away with it everywhere he goes. He'll just find new suckers in a new town and start all over.

I am still amazed he was crazy enough to show his face in Portland again and even more amazed people would go to his place to eat.

I feel so sorry for anyone that has ever had dealings with Steve Yaw, he is a crook, a cheat, and a criminal in my mind. I was one of his partners when we opened the restaurant in the Llyod Center back in the early 80's. He still owes me thousands of dollars, after I put in most of the money to open and start operations. I wish I could have warned all of the people that dealt with him. I hope he goes straight to hell !!! Anyone that wants to contact me, my email dhyatt14yahoo.com

His father is rolling in his grave right now, I have heard and seen the display of Mr Yaw while in the resturant, I feel sorry for the workers. The last time we where there in Dec. we took our son thee for dinner, he was home for Christmas....our food was freezing cold, there was not enough staff to handle a Friday night, and whoever was the manager that night, looked like he was going to keel over from stress, I kid you not, this poor man was at his wits end, all he did the whole time we where there was run around putting our fires....I feel bad, because I really wanted this place to work out, but I will NEVER go back....not after the last experience in Dec...

I remember introducing the two of you! My son Cameron also worked there. My father Lowell Tiller was a consultant for Steve Yaw years ago when he trashed the prior Yaws. Dad was a good friend of Page's and sold product to them for years. He watched Steve try to turn the places into "Steak Houses" against his advice. That's what killed them, not some freeway off ramp, or any other story he might pitch. I hope the TRUTH will finally prevail about this man and his ways.

I was contacted yesterday by employment department inquiring about houres worked at Yaws. I had been employed by them from May 11 to February 26 and Lisa(the bookkeeper) told them I have never worked for Yaws. If you look at the picture above I am the person in back of him on the right side of the picture. I was the forman for the remodel which has never been paid for and was operating the business for him while he was drunk and incapable of working claiming his pending back surgery as the reason he needed to take Oxys and boose at the same time. Which again he's never paid for. Good going Stephen Yaw you have sucsessfully trashed a great business in record time. You had it all and threw it all away Needless to say the employment dept probably is not very happy
