Still time for discounted tree buying

Yes, for some of you, there is still time to both buy and plant street trees in parking strips.

Friends of Trees is offering trees, at $35 to $75 apiece depending on variety and location, to property owners in the Argay, Parkrose, Parkrose Heights, Russell, Sumner and Wilkes neighborhoods through February 4.

If you live in the Argay, Parkrose, Parkrose Heights, Russell, Sumner and Wilkes neighborhoods, there is still time to both buy and plant street trees in parking strips.

 

Trees are offered that are calculated not to cause damage to pavement or overhead wires in a specific site.

MHCC will hold the 43rd annual Scrooge Lives Holiday Craft Sale Dec. 4 (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.) and Dec. 5 (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) in the Gresham campus Student Union, 26000 S.E. Stark St. Shawn Schlogel, an MHCC graduate, will play holiday tunes in a solo piano performance from noon to 1 p.m., both days.

Christmas bazaars abound in mid-county this weekend.

House District 47 candidates answer question

With Jefferson Smith forced to resign the House District 47 seat to run for Portland mayor, the outer east Portland district is up for grabs in November.

With neighborhoods as diverse as Wilkes on the north end and Powellhurst-Gilbert on the south, the district has a large population.

The candidates, Democrat Jessica Vega Pederson and Republican Maggie Nelson, were asked the same question:

“Why is it important constituents know who their state representative is and what they do?”

Thirty years at the organ is no grind

Rivercrest Community Church organist Paul Quarino was feted with a ceremony and reception honoring his thirty years as music director at the outer east Portland church last month.

Nearly every parishioner of Rivercrest Community Church turned out for a ceremony to honor organist Paul Quarino’s thirty years of making music at the outer northeast Portland church.

The ceremony included a video presentation, friends’ tributes, anecdotes about Quarino’s long service, performances by him and presentation of gifts and a plaque. Presenter Marjorie Woodfill said, “We wanted to attend a church with an organ. I just want to tell you how much your music means to me. And I love you.”


Police investigate homicide in Wilkes neighborhood

Last night, police officers responded to a call of shots fired at a residence in the 14800 block of Northeast Fremont Court in the Wilkes neighborhood of outer east Portland.

According to a Portland Police Bureau news release, arriving officers found a deceased adult male at a residence. Immediately, they began searching the area for a suspect and called for Homicide Detectives and the Forensic Evidence Division.

Investigators are on scene and no additional details area available at this time as this is an active and ongoing investigation.
