Tom West, girls varsity basketball coach at Portland Christian for 30 years, was named Oregon’s 2010-2011 National Federation of State High School Associations Coach of the Year.
Former Portland Christian girls varsity coach Tom West, center, holding plaque, was named 2011 National Federation of State High School Associations Coach of the Year. West quit coaching after 30 years at the school. He won three state titles, including a 29-0, undefeated record in 2007.
Football
Despite a conference record of 1-4, the David Douglas Scots took advantage of play-in game defeating North Medford 20-6 to advance to the 6-A state tournament. They beat West Linn 17-14, but were ousted by Oregon City 28-18 the following week.

Parkrose finished the season 3-5 to qualify for a state tournament play-in game against PIL champs, Jefferson. The Democrats prevailed 36-19, bringing the Bronco season to an end on a cold, wet and rainy night. Zach Abney, Quame Adams, Jonathan Boland, Marquis Hammick, Jerry Hunter, Thomas Lott and Henry Vy earned Northwest Oregon Conference honorable mention honors.

With just one first place finish and 2.5 points to spare, the Portland Christian Boys Track & Field Team took first place at the OSAA/U.S. Bank/Les Schwab Tires State Championship 3A/2A/1A Track & Field meet that concluded yesterday.
Senior Nathan Rowlett, PC’s lone first place finisher in the javelin, threw himself into first place with a 187′ throw.
It was a total team effort, besides Rowlett’s first place finish, there were just two other PC top three finishers in the individual events: Andrew Landstrom placed second in the Boys 3,000 Meter Run and David Nuttleman garnered second in the Boys Pole Vault event.
We received a note from Jodie Rossi, one of our Portland Christian Schools information sources, about an event tomorrow night at the Jr./Sr. High School, 12425 N.E. San Rafael St., in outer east Portland.

“Everyone is invited to International Food Night, Saturday, May 8. This special event is an exciting opportunity to eat foods from other cultures prepared by our International Student Program students. We will also have a performance by the internationally famous Japanese Drum Dancers, Portland Taiko.
Kim Hill, a senior at Portland Christian Jr/Sr High School in east Portland, previously featured in the Memo for her basketball and volleyball skills, was again recognized recently for her athletic abilities.
The Gatorade Company, in partnership with RISE Magazine, last month announced that Hill has been tapped as its 2007-08 Gatorade Oregon Volleyball Player of the Year.
Kim Hill is the daughter of Argay residents Bradd and Terri Hill; Bradd Hill owns Chet Hill Insurance, Inc., in Parkrose, an independent agency started by his father in 1954.
Students and faculty of Portland Christian Jr./Sr. High School are holding a Walk-A-Thon Friday, October 19, from noon to 3 p.m., at the school in benefit for Carolyn Dowd, head of the English Department and a breast cancer victim.
Walk-A-Thon participants will be taking pledges for every lap completed, with all proceeds given to Dowd helping to defray costs incurred with a fight like this.
Organizers will also accept donations from anyone who chooses not to walk, but would like to help.
Dowd came to Portland Christian High School in 1995. Since that time, she has led the English department to higer academic achievement and excellence from all her students.
This year, both Portland Christian Royals varsity teams made it to the 2006 2A Boys and Girls OSAA State Championship Tournament that begins Wednesday, March 1st in Pendleton at the convention center.
The Portland Christian girls varsity, undefeated champions of the Northwest League at 15-0 and 22-4 overall, tip-off at 6:30 p.m. against Willamina.
The Portland Christian boys varsity team, also champions of the Northwest League at 14-1 and 23-3 overall, begin play Thursday, March 2 against Bandon at 3:15 p.m.
With both varsity basketball programs having a good chance to win state, Portland Christian has had a successful 2006 campaign no matter the outcome in Pendleton.
