Friends of Trees plants 555 trees in east Portland

In March, Mid-county homeowners and other Friends of Trees volunteers planted 245 trees in the Argay, Parkrose, Parkrose Heights, Russell, Sumner and Wilkes neighborhoods of east Portland.

Following the planting, Friends of Trees‘ nonprofit partner, Verde, planted an additional 310 trees from Friends of Trees in the same neighborhoods.

Cal Calloway behind one of six new Golden Raindrops Crabapple® trees recently planted for him by Friends of Trees.

The 555 tree orders were the result of an overwhelming response to a special offer of free trees to residents in some of Portland’s neighborhoods most in need of trees.


Thieves steal hospital employees’ property

Portland Police are asking for the public’s help identifying two women who entered the employee’s locker room at Portland Adventist Medical Center, 10123 S.E. Market St., Friday, April 20, and stole employees’ property.

Hospital surveillance cameras captured images of the suspects as they walked through the east Portland hospital, then into the employee area.

The police described them as in their 20′s with brown hair and wearing dark, hooded sweatshirts.


Parkrose comes together to support Seery family

Parkrose High senior Felicia Seery has lost her battle with Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

The vivacious drama student and Parkrose Middle School Sparrow will be remembered with a handful of events in the next several days.

On Saturday, April 21 the Parkrose School District classified staff have put together a benefit for the Seery family at the Russellville Grange Hall, 12105 N.E. Prescott St. The event begins at 6 p.m. Admission to this adults only event is $5. Food will be provided by the Parkrose Boosters


Yaw’s Top Notch leases space in east Portland

Today’s Oregonian Business section has an announcement that Yaw’s Top Notch Restaurant Inc. leased the space currently occupied by Gossip Restaurant & Lounge at 11340 N.E. Halsey St.

Before closing in the early 80s, Yaw’s was a popular restaurant in the Hollywood neighborhood for decades.

After Carrows, followed by its sister company, Coco’s Bakery Restaurant, closed in the late 80s, the 6,700 sq.ft. space on Halsey Street has had a checkered history of nightclub occupants.


Suspect vehicle rams police car, gets away after high speed chase in southeast Portland today

According to a news release from the Portland Police Bureau, this afternoon, officers pursued a northbound vehicle on Southeast 84th Avenue near Flavel Street  traveling at a high rate of speed.

Police got behind the vehicle on Southeast 82nd Avenue and followed it southbound as it attempted to elude officers.

Police pursued the vehicle onto Malden Street where the suspect vehicle did a rapid u-turn, then rammed the front of the patrol car, and sped away southbound on 82nd Avenue. The officers continued to pursue for a short distance but terminated the pursuit.


Tip leads police to quick arrest

Last night, around 8 p.m., police responded to a report of an armed robbery outside Jody’s Bar & Grill, 12035 N.E. Glisan St. in east Portland.

The adult male victim told police that two people, a man and woman, approached him in the parking lot of the strip club demanding money and brandishing a weapon.
After taking his cash and wallet, the suspects fled on foot.

Police, including a K-9 unit, conducted a neighborhood search for the suspects, but they eluded capture.


Parkrose teachers vote to strike

In a voice choking with emotion, Jerry Landreth, Parkrose Faculty Association vice-president, announced teachers voted to authorize the bargaining committee to call a strike.

“After a process of sharing information and discussion, an overwhelming majority of members of the Parkrose Faculty Association have voted to authorize the bargaining team to call for a strike in the bargaining process with the district,” Landreth said.

By law, the teachers have to wait at least ten days before walking out. Landreth said they hope to continue bargaining with the district in the interim. Landreth said of the 189 certified employees, 95 percent attended the strike authorization meeting.


Fischer Gray stays

Parkrose School District Superintendent Karen Fischer Gray, one of four finalists for the Reynolds superintendent’s job, was not selected.

In an e-mail today, Fischer Gray said she was not selected, but was one of two finalists.

Andrea Watson, Reynolds media communications coordinator, said that at tonight’s regular school board business meeting, they will make their hiring recommendation, then take action on it.

Watson said if it all goes as planned, the name of the new superintendent will be released at the end of tonight’s meeting.


Rummage sale benefits veterans

American Legion Auxiliary Portland Unit #1 annual rummage sale is Friday and Saturday, April 13 and 14 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, April 15 from 9 a.m. until noon at 1830 S.E. 122nd Ave. in outer east Portland.

Russell Academy hosts Safe Routes to School annual kick-off event tomorrow

The annual Safe Routes to School Spring Kick-Off event is tomorrow, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Russell Academy, 2700 NE 127th Ave.

Brought to you by the Portland Bureau of Transportation, the free family event celebrates health, safety and physical activity.

Safe Routes to School annual Spring kick-off event is tomorrow.

 

You can learn how to safely ride a bicycle, map and plan a bicycle trip and do basic bike maintenance.

Games and activities for the kids, a free raffle for a new bicycle, art projects, a healthy lunch and a community bike ride at 1 p.m. are all part of the event.
