Parkrose, Argay new crime prevention coordinator introduces herself

New personnel arrives with the realigning of Portland’s police precincts from five to three. Recently, we received an e-mail letter of introduction from Mary Tompkins, the new crime prevention coordinator for the Parkrose and Argay Neighborhood Associations of east Portland, it follows.

“Hello: Argay, Beaumont-Wilshire, Hollywood, Parkrose, Rose City Park, and Roseway neighborhood association representatives.

“I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to all of you, as your new Crime Prevention Coordinator. Due to the recent Police Bureau precinct restructuring, I have been given this wonderful opportunity to work with all of you.


Free swim lessons, open swims as public pools open Monday

Portland Parks & Recreation opens outdoor pools for the summer this Monday, June 22. Free swim lessons and free open swims are also offered as part of PP&R’sSummer Free for All
The outdoor pools — open through August — are located at these parks or schools: Creston, Grant, Montavilla (on Northeast 82nd Avenue at Glisan Street in east Portland), Peninsula, Pier, Sellwood, and Wilson.

In addition, PP&R operates six indoor, year-round pools: Buckman, Columbia, East Portland Community Center, Matt Dishman Community Center, Mt. Scott Community Center, and Southwest Community Center.


East Side MAX Station Area Project open house tonight

The Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability airs its recommendations for its East Side MAX Station Area Project tonight at an open house from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the East Portland Community Center & Pool, 705 S.E. 106th Ave.

Planners will recommend traffic and transportation improvements and some zone changes for the area within a half mile of six east side MAX stations.

Cycle the Well Field in outer east Portland

Columbia Slough Watershed Council sent us an e-mail about the last chance to sign up for Cycle the Well Field, Saturday, June 13 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

This annual bicycling tour of Portland’s local groundwater well field will work your muscles and your brain at the same time, as experts from the Portland Water Bureau teach you about Portland’s back-up water supply system.

Portland Metro Concert Band performs free Flag Day concert

The Portland Metro Concert Band presents a Flag Day Concert Sunday, June 14 at 3:00 p.m. in the Horner Performing Arts Center on the David Douglas High School campus in outer east Portland at 1400 S.E. 13th Ave.

In honor of the holiday, the program includes a variety of music with patriotic themes: the Carmen Dragon arrangement of “America the Beautiful,” a medley of George M. Cohan tunes titled “Star Spangled Salute:”  a collection of World War II songs called “The Homefront,” and a medley of service songs titled “Armed Forces Salute.”


Recruiting Youth to Serve on the Public Involvement Advisory Council

June Mid-county Memo summary

The June 2009 edition of the Mid-county Memo has also, after being sedulously delivered by the United States Postal Service,  been posted online.

Gracing this issue’s front page are the gracious ladies of the Elkettes, a 50-member strong ladies auxiliary of  the Gateway Elks

Argay NA reports successful clean up

At its annual clean held  Saturday, east Portland’s Argay Neighborhood Association chair Valerie Curry said more than 120 vehicles deposited over 18 tons of household discards, yard debris, scrap metal and tires for disposal or recycling.

ANA chair  Curry said the volunteer help they received from members of the Parkrose High School soccer team,  led by PHS junior varsity soccer coach Arlo DeLeon,  was invaluable.

Also on site helping were members of the  Portland Police Bureau Cadets.

The ANA partnered with Metro and Portland’s Bureau of Planning & Sustainability to produce the annual event.


PDX Airport Futures meets Thursday

On Thursday, June 4 at Harney Elementary School Cafeteria, 3212 E. Evergreen Blvd. in Vancouver the Airport Futures Planning Advisory Group meet (whatever happened to plain old  “committee?”). And again Wednesday, June 10 (closer to home) in east Portland’s Portland Fire & Rescue’s Training Center, 4800 N.E. 122nd Ave.

The Airport Futures Planning Advisory Group is a 30-member group that meet and “guide the planning process.”
What is Airport Futures? From their Web site:

“Airport Futures is a collaborative effort between the City of Portland, Port of Portland, and the Portland-Vancouver metropolitan community to create an integrated long-range development plan for Portland International Airport (PDX).
