The 15.7 acre Beech Property is located next to Shaver Elementary School. Portland Parks & Recreation purchased the parcels in 1984 and 1999 from the Garre family as part of a long-range vision to provide a large neighborhood park to serve this part of Mid-Multnomah County.
The property has been land banked since its purchase and the Garres continued farming on the site until May.
The areas inside the yellow lines are the two parcels slated to become a park.
At a meeting recently held at Shaver the interim management plan for the future park was discussed.
Reader Walt Lersch, sent us an e-mail about an incident in the Hazelwood neighborhood last Saturday (6/16) evening.
To the editor:
Saturday evening when driving home from dinner I noticed something going on
in the Northwest corner of the vacant Albertson’s parking lot at N.E. 122nd Avenue
and Halsey Street. I dropped the family off at home and returned to see
what was going on.
There was a Boss Hawgs banner and Budweiser banner draped around the wrestling ring. The announcer stated that this was a preview of the full show which would take place at the same location the next day from Noon through the evening.
Sacramento School proposes safety improvements
The Sacramento School Safe Routes to School program last month tentatively selected a menu of physical improvements designed to make walking to school safer and easier. Some of them involve improvements to the school’s parking lot, on the theory that a more orderly school pickup and drop off process would contribute to school safety.
According to Anna Scalera, coordinator of the program, the tentative list calls for controls, resigning and remarking the school parking lot, parking restrictions near 32 private driveways on Northeast Sacramento Street between 111th and 117th avenues.
We recently received a note from Erin Sutherland, Director of Community Relations, Oregon College of Oriental Medicine about their open house in June.
Since their event will occur before the July Mid-county Memo is published, we wanted to help spread the word about their event.
Here is Erin’s invitation:
You are cordially invited to an Open House at Oregon College of Oriental Medicine (OCOM) on Thursday, June 28 from 4 to 8 p.m.
The event is designed to give prospective students, clinic patients, community partners, neighbors and friends an idea of what we do.
The New York Mets used its first pick in this year’s major league baseball draft to select Eddie Kunz, a 2004 Parkrose High graduate. The hard throwing right-handed pitcher was the 42nd player taken over all.
Kunz played for Parkrose Little League as a youngster and was part of the Parkrose High baseball team that were co-champions of the Mt. Hood Conference. He also played football and basketball as a Bronco.
For the last three seasons Kunz has been a member of the nationally ranked Oregon State Beaver baseball team. As a middle relief pitcher last season, he helped the Beavers claim the NCAA national championship banner.
