Memo Letters...

The Mid-county Memo is your newspaper. We want to hear from you. Discuss an important issue or address a concern you want to call to the community’s attention. We prefer e-mailed letters to the editor sent to Darlene Vinson at editor@midcountymemo.com. Please put “Letter to the editor” in the subject line. You may also mail your letter to 3510 N.E. 134th Ave., Portland, OR 97230 or fax it to 503-249-7672. Our deadline for the July issue is Friday, June 15.

Neighborhood cleanup too successful

To the Editor:

First we want to thank all those who brought recycling and other items to the East Portland Neighborhood Cleanup on Saturday, May 12. It was so successful; the number of residents participating surprised us.

The volume of users led to some problems. We had 18 dumpsters on order, more than twice a many as previous cleanups. The dumpsters filled so fast, we could not get them emptied without making people wait. Twice during the day we had to stop all unloading because there was nowhere to put the deposits.

Filling all the allocated dumpsters so quickly also meant we had to shut down before the announced closing time of the event, which forced us to turn some people away.

We apologize to any who could not be served.

Thanks to Albertson’s for the donation of its parking lot for the event. It was generous to do this for the community. And thanks to more than 40 neighborhood association volunteers who worked at the event.

Again, thanks for making the event so huge. We didn’t expect it or plan for it. We will next time.

Bonny McKnight
