Memo Calendar...(continued) MEETINGS Lions active in our community The Parkrose Lions Club invites you to attend their meeting and find out what they are all about. Join them and they will treat you to dinner. The July meetings of the Parkrose Lions Club will be Wednesdays July 2 and 16. The meetings will be held at the Royal Garden Chinese Restaurant, 13816 N.E. Sandy Blvd. Dinner is at 6 p.m. with the meeting beginning at 6:30 p.m. Come find out what activities the Parkrose Lions will be working on to help the Parkrose community. Parkrose Lions have provided over 70 years of service to the needy and to those who have hearing and sight disabilities in our local area. Women in business Soroptimist International Portland East is a part of the worlds largest classified service organization for business and professional women. The club meets Wednesdays from 12:00-1:15 p.m. at the New Copper Penny on Southeast 92nd Avenue and Foster Road. Lunch is free to first time guests. Please note - during July and August the group will meet only on the second Wednesday of the month, July 9 and August 6. Soroptimist International Portland East will be awarding several $2,000 Womens Opportunity Awards in February 2004. To qualify you must be: a female head of household; attending an undergraduate degree program or vocational/skills training program and have financial need. Womens Opportunity Awards are cash awards that assist women in obtaining the skills and education they need to improve their employment status. Recipients may use the awards for any expenses related to their educational pursuits. The deadline for receipt of applications is December 15, 2003. In addition, Soroptimist International Portland East will be awarding several Violet Richardson Awards in February 2004. To qualify you must be: a high school girl age 14-17; actively involved in the community by volunteering in an organization that somehow improves the lives of women and girls. Violet Richardson Awards are cash awards that reward girls for their involvement in the community. The award money has no restrictions for spending. The top award recipient will also have a $500 award granted to their volunteer organization of choice. The deadline for receipt of applications is December 15, 2003. Dynamic group, dynamic speaker The Gateway Area Business Association (GABA) General Membership meeting will be Thursday, July 10 from 11:45 a.m. -1:00 p.m. at JJ Norths Grand Buffet, 10520 N.E. Halsey. The guest speaker will be Craig Opperman, Director of Community Programs for Christie School. In January 2003 he opened the Childrens Receiving Center of Multnomah County, a center providing a safe, nurturing environment for children in crisis. The Center is located at 10305 East Burnside and is a supporting organization of the Christie School. GABA serves businesses in Gateway, Glisan Street, Mall 205, Menlo Park, Midway, 111th Square, San Rafael and in-between. Graduate honored The Gateway Elks Lodge is proud to announce their selection for Teen of the Month for July. Their choice is Nari Soo Jung Kirk of Portland Adventist Academy, a graduating senior with a GPA of 4.00. Nari has displayed unusual and worthy accomplishments during her high school career. She received recognition as one of the top scholars in Mid County. She is a National Honor Society member and on the National Honor Roll. Some of her accomplishments include projects and activities with her family, for her school and for her community. Examples of her involvement include awards in Spanish, advanced chemistry and biology, performance in musical programs, and piano accompaniments for various vocal groups. Naris scholastic program also involved editing and reporting for the school newspaper, and acting, designing and directing school drama productions including the Shakespearean Drama Club. Her volunteer work includes serving as a junior counselor, providing piano concerts at nursing homes, and tutoring other students. Naris numerous interests extend into her hobbies, which include playing the piano, camping, hiking and drawing. Her parents, Stanley and Nancy Kirk, have been actively involved in her education. She plans to attend Walla Walla College. The Elks general membership meeting will be Thursday, July 17 at the Gateway Lodge located at 711 N.E. 100th Ave. No rest for the weary Coming off a month filled with scholarship presentations, and the Rose Festival Cruise-in, not to mention their regular activities, the Parkrose Business Association (PBA) will welcome guest speaker and long-time PBA supporter, Dennis Harvey. Harvey has turned his concern about our environment into active participation and will address salmon recovery efforts on the Columbia and Lewis Rivers at the general meeting on Thursday July 17 at Steamers Restaurant, 8303 N.E. Sandy Blvd., from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. The spotlight will be on John and Chuck Chen of Chens Acupuncture and Massage Center during the traditional Member Moment. If your business serves the Parkrose area, drop by for the $10 buffet lunch. Network, and benefit from the presentations of the speakers. A Board Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, July 9 at 7 a.m. at the Best Western Pony Soldier Inn, 9901 N.E. Sandy Blvd. The PBA will take a break in August. No general meeting. Your neighborhood associations These active groups provide a vital link between residents and the City government. Contact the East Portland Neighborhood Office (EPNO) to get involved. While many of the associations do not hold business meetings during the busy summer months, check below to learn about plans for the annual National Night Out Celebrations. The July meeting of the Parkrose Neighborhood Association (PNA) is scheduled for Tuesday, July 15 at 7 p.m. at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, 11229 N.E. Parkrose Heights Association of Neighbors will be holding a Board meeting on July 15 at 7 p.m. in Miller Hall at Parkrose United Methodist Church, 11111 N. E. Knott St. This is a working session of the Board but is an open meeting. A National Night Out Celebration is scheduled for Tuesday, August 5 in Knott Park. Ron Moon is chairing this event and has some wonderful plans in store for this year. The Blue Plate Special will appear live. Children will enjoy face painting, balloons and special activities just for them. There will be ice cream and food vendors. Pack up your family, perhaps a picnic supper, bring a blanket or lawn chairs and join your neighbors at Knott Park. The Argay Neighborhood Association will not meet in July. The Wilkes Community Group will skip business meetings in July and August when many of their neighbors are out of town, but they will be hosting a free picnic to celebrate National Night Out on Tuesday, August 5 in Wilkes Park on Northeast 154th Avenue just South of Sandy Boulevard. This event will run from 6-8 p.m. and will feature mounted police and canine units, music, entertainment, and fun activities for the whole family. As this park is under development, the community group hopes to provide fundraising opportunities at the picnic as well. |
