Memo Calendar (continued) ... Neighborhood Watch in Argay Shaver Parent Faculty Association or SPFA will be coordinating a Neighborhood Watch program at the January meeting. The meeting will be hosted by the Shaver Parent Faculty Association at Shaver Elementary School, in the Library on Tuesday evening, January 13, starting at 6:30 p.m. Special Guest Teri Poppino, Crime Prevention Specialist for East Portland. The Neighborhood Watch program is designed to increase neighborhood livability by reducing crime and the fear of crime through active citizen participation. Representatives of this effort would like you to talk to your neighbors and make sure that at least one person from your block comes to this meeting. The more participation, the more effective the program. Free childcare will be provided in the gym. Building a stronger, safer community starts with one step, this one. SCHOOL CORNER Round up of 5 year olds for kindergarten art Teachers and staff of Jason Lee Elementary School, 2222 N.E. 92nd Ave. will host a Kindergarten Round Up on Thursday, January 22 from 1-2 p.m. Jason Lee is an Arts Infused school offering music, PE and library specialists. Class sizes are small. To register, children must be 5 years old on or before September 1, 2004. Parents should bring the childs birth certificate, immunization records and proof of residency. Winter evening classes for adults and youth David Douglas SUN/Community School, located at Alice Ott Middle School, will offer evening classes for youth and adults this winter. Portland Parks and Recreation, Multnomah County and David Douglas School District sponsor this class. These classes are open to everyone, so try a new class this winter at Alice Ott. Exercise boot camp Over 700 health clubs around the country are offering boot camp style exercise classes. Mt. Hood Community College or MHCC will be offering its own version-a kinder and gentler approach that promises to help you get in shape and have fun at the same time. Exercise Boot Camp (PE185FE) is a new course offering different levels of exercise for ages 16+. This course will meet five days a week for five weeks from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. One class is underway; a second five-week class will begin February 9. Some days the class will meet outside and utilize the track to run, walk, do calisthenics, have relay races or play an organized game. Other days they may be inside the gym using free weights, performing aerobic exercises or other circuit style programs. There is little chance of boredom. Some people participate as an entrance back into healthy exercise, while others participate to support training for such things as a marathon. So if you are looking for a way to get in shape for the New Year and you think you have the right stuff, check out the MHCC Boot Camp. Hearing screening A free hearing screening will be offered by a representative from Sonus Hearing Care Center on Wednesday, January 7 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the Cherry Blossom Senior Services office run by the YWCA Mid County District Center at 740 S.E. 106th Ave. For more information, call 503-988-6073. The YWCA offers Tender care for toes A Foot Care Clinic will soothe Mid-County feet at the East Portland Community Center, 740 S.E. 106th Ave. The YWCA is sponsoring these clinics, where professional nurses will soak participants feet and clip their toenails. The initial visit is $22, with future appointments costing $20. Clinics are scheduled for January 8 and 22. Appointments are required. The Clinic is sponsored by the Cherry Blossom Senior Services program office run by the YWCA Mid County District Center, Multnomah County Aging and Disability Services, and Portland Parks and Recreation. Solutions for seniors The Elders in Action Ombudsman can help you find solutions to many of the challenges and problems faced by seniors in our society today. Elders in Action have specially trained volunteers available to assist seniors (60+) and people 18 and older with a long-term disability who live independently in Portland Neighborhoods. Issues such as handling the threat of eviction, denial of services by a health plan, identity theft/scams as well as other types of problems. An Ombudsman can help improve the quality of life by providing problem solving assistance; advocating for your rights, safety, dignity and well being; providing information and link you with community services. An Ombudsman can also provide emotional and peer support; provide physical support in making phone calls; filling out paperwork, accompanying you to appointments; educating and encouraging you in self-advocacy. These services available are free. Elders in Action volunteers are also available to speak to senior and community groups about Senior Scams and other Bad Stuff - Home Safety and Security and Breast Health Awareness. Washington St. FUNDRAISERS Carnegie Hall or Bust Parkrose High School A Cappella Choir will be holding a Huge Garage Sale on Saturday, January 17 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The garage sale will be held at Parkrose High School, 12003 N.E. Shaver St. The money from this fundraiser will assist the choir in their trip to New York City to sing at Carnegie Hall. Donate refundable cans and bottles On the first Saturday of each month at Parkrose Middle School members of the Bronco Boosters collect pop cans and bottles to raise funds for scholarships. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. the Parkrose High School Bronco Boosters will collect refundable aluminum cans and refundable glass and plastic bottles. Please save your refundable cans and bottles and donate them to Parkrose. Parkrose Middle School is located at 11800 N.E.
