Special classes for special kids
Montavilla Community Center and East Portland Community Center are offering special sport classes for children from 5 to 11 years old with disabilities and special needs. East Portland Community Center will be offering a Tae Kwon Do class. This form of Korean martial arts builds self-confidence, self-discipline & inner strength in a non-competitive spirit. Classes will be held every Monday from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. from Monday, Jan. 13 through Monday, March 17. Cost is $25.

East Portland Community Center will also be holding a Sports Time on Thursdays from 5 to 6 p.m. from Thursday, Jan 16 through Thursday, March 6. Participants expend energy learning and playing with new and old friends in games like soccer, basketball, kickball and trampoline. Cost is $25. The East Portland Community Center is located at 740 S.E. 106th Ave.

Montavilla Community Center, 8219 N.E. Glisan St. is offering an Aikido class. Aikido is a non-competitive Japanese martial art of self-defense. The focus is rolling and tumbling skills. Through these movements, participants work on gross motor skills and gain confidence in their own body. Classes will be held on Saturdays from 2 to 3 p.m., from Saturday, Jan. 25 through Saturday, March 22.

Learn something new
A variety of classes are offered this month at the Gregory Heights Library, 7921 N.E. Sandy Blvd. Gregory Heights Library hours are Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and closed Monday. • Story Stop: Listen to stories almost every day! Children of all ages and their adults are invited to stop by the library for a short, daily program of fun stories. This program is held Tuesday through Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
• Tiny Tots: Storytimes for children aged 1 to 2 years with adult will be held every Thursday at 10:15 a.m.
• Preschool Storytime: Storytimes for children aged 3 to 6 years with adult will be held every Friday at 11 a.m.
• Bedtime Storytime: Put on your pajamas, grab a bedtime buddy and join in for stories, songs and fun on Tuesdays at 7 p.m.
• Zooflakes ABC: A is for alligator, B is for bear. Can you find the animal hiding in there? Local author and artist Will Howell will show you how to create the inventive cut-paper snowflakes used in his recent book “Zooflakes ABC.” Learn how Howell, a retired school teacher, uses art and the alphabet to produce a fun and interactive book for kids. The session will be held on Saturday, Jan. 25 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.
• Young Reader’s Club: All readers ten and older are invited to join in for discussion, fun and friends. For the meeting on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m., read “True Believer” by Virginia Euwer Wolff.
• Email for Beginners: Prerequisite: Web Basics. Learn how to use a free email on the Web like Yahoo or Hotmail. Sign up, then compose and send messages anywhere in the world. Get connected with this workshop on Saturday, Jan. 4 from 9 to 10 a.m. Pre-registration is required for this class, please call 503-988-5386.
• Cyber Sundays: One-on-one computer help is available at Gregory Heights on Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. Specially trained volunteers will teach you how to use the online catalog, search the Internet, play educational computer games with your kids and discover what a “mouse” can do.
• Cyber Seniors Computer Classes: This series of three classes is designed for seniors who are interested in learning the very basics of how to use a computer. Learn to use a mouse, search the Internet, and send and receive e-mail. Each session will consist of one hour of instruction and one hour of practice. Participants must pre-register and attend all three classes, held on Tuesday, Jan. 7, Tuesday, Jan 14 and Tuesday, Jan 21, all at 9 a.m.
• Gregory Heights Computer Lab: Library staff help beginners practice computer basics in the computer lab at Gregory Heights. Pre-registration required for the classes, which will be 9 to 10 a.m. Classes will be Saturday, Jan. 11, Saturday, Jan. 18 and Saturday, Jan. 25.
• Book Discussion Group: Join the “Everybody Reads” community discussion by reading “A Lesson Before Dying” by Ernest J. Gaines and attending the regular discussion group, meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m.
• Self-Help Water Conservation Workshop: Learn how to detect and repair leaks, lower water usage and decrease water and sewer bills in this 90-minute workshop. Participants will receive a free water conservation kit. Pre-registration is required for the class, held on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 11 a.m.

Midland offers free classes
The Midland branch of the Multnomah County Library, located at 805 S.E. 122nd Ave., offers many free activities for adults and families. Library hours are: Sunday, from 1 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., closed Monday. In January, weekly events include computer and Internet classes and story times. Pre-registration is required for all classes. There will also be many special events. • Reading to the Dogs: Improve your reading skills and make a new friend by reading aloud to therapy dogs. The dogs and handlers are from the Dove Lewis Animal Assisted Therapy Program. Pre-registration is required for this class, held on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 3 p.m., on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 6 p.m., on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 3 p.m., and on Thursday, Jan. 30 at 6 p.m. All sessions run for an hour and a half.
• Tabletop Magic: Beginning magicians! Learn a series of tabletop magic tricks and get tips on how to put on your own magic show from magician Tim Alexander. This class is recommended for children 7 years and older. Pre-registration is required for this class, held on Wed. Jan. 22 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.
• Web for Computer Novices: This class is designed for the complete beginner. Learn basic computer terms and keyboard and mouse skills. Pre-registration is required for this class, held on Tuesday, Jan. 7 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. and again on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at 2 p.m.
• Book Discussion Group: Join the “Everybody Reads” community discussion by reading “A Lesson Before Dying” by Ernest J. Gaines and attending the regular discussion group, meeting on Wednesday, Jan 8 at 7 p.m. and again on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 1 p.m.
• Web Basics: Learn about the World Wide Web, explore the library’s home page, and practice entering Web addresses. Participants need to be comfortable using a keyboard and a mouse. Pre-registration is required to attend either session of the class. One session will be held on Friday, Jan. 10 at 2 p.m., and the other will be held Tuesday, Jan 14 at 2:30 p.m.
• A Lesson Before Dying Film Screening: Directed by Joseph Sargent, this PG-13 film stars Mekhi Phifer as the wrongly accused Jefferson and Don Cheadle as schoolteacher Grant Wiggins. This screening will be held on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 3 p.m.
• Web Searching: Prerequisite: Web Basics. How do you find good information on the Web? We’ll get you started with a few simple tools, then help you understand why some Web sites might be better choices than others for reliable information. Pre-registration is required for this class, held on Thursday, Jan 23 at 2 p.m.
• E-mail for beginners: Prerequisite: Web Basics. Learn how to use free e-mail on the Web, like Yahoo or Hotmail. Sign up, then compose and send messages to anywhere in the world. Pre-registration required for this class, held on Friday, Jan. 24 at 10:15 a.m.
• The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman Film Screening: Cicely Tyson stars in this 1974 film, which comments on the Civil War to the Civil Rights Movement from the perspective of a black woman. John Korty directs the film, shown on Saturday, Jan 25 at 3 p.m.
