Memo Calendar (continued) ... Put your free time to good use The Parkrose Lions Club encourages Parkrose community members to join them in supporting the community. They improve the Parkrose area through a variety of fun and worthwhile activities, and are always looking for more volunteers. Come to this months meeting to find out what activities are being planned that you would like to be involved in. The Parkrose Lions will even treat first-time guests to a free dinner - come enjoy the free food and the good feeling you get from improving your community. The December meetings will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 4 and Wednesday, Dec. 18 at the Royal Garden Restaurant, 13816 N.E. Turn your home into a garden Any home can benefit from the introduction of the beautiful colors and aromas of flowers and plants. The Mid-county area offers a club that can help you brighten up your home whether you are a beginner or an expert. Among other things, the Indoor Gardening Club offers helpful tips for your thriving indoor plants. Each meeting includes a special program, often with field trips, guest speakers, and plant exchanges. Every meeting also includes a delicious potluck dinner provided by all those who attend. Montavilla Kiwanis Club meetings The Montavilla Kiwanis is a service organization, part of the International Kiwanis Club. They help to support local non-profit organizations. Network - and learn something new Parkrose business owners - dont miss this months exciting meeting of the Parkrose Business Association. Each months meeting includes not only a guest speaker from the community speaking on a topic of interest, but also a Member Moment. This allows you to expand your knowledge of the area, learn about other businesses, and advertise your own business when its your turn in the spotlight. December will bring a special holiday event on Friday, Dec. 6 in Steamers Restaurant, 8303 N.E. Sandy Blvd., from 6 to 9 p.m. Reservations required due to limited seating. Dont miss your opportunity to experience the culinary delight of Steamers Holiday Buffet, which will include six types of salad as well as a roast turkey. This holiday event will also include great entertainment - both the Parkrose High School Debonnaires and the Phoenix Theater will perform. The evening also includes a silent auction benefiting the Scholarship Fund and door prizes. Cost to attend is $20. Impress your co-workers Want to go from shy wallflower to the go-getter wowing the boss? Toastmasters International can help you learn to conquer your nervousness about speaking in front of others. As you gain confidence, you will be able to do presentations and attend important meetings without those butterflies in your stomach. Spend your mornings helping others Spend an early morning once a week with a companionable group of folks. Join the Mall 205 Early Riser Kiwanis. This service club is a part of Kiwanis International, and works to support such local charities as Snow-CAP and the East Portland Community Center. The Early Risers meet at 7 a.m. every Thursday in the Old Country Buffet in Plaza 205, at 10542 S.E. Washington St. Help make our world a better place. Gateway Elks club opens new doors The Gateway Elks offer not only the chance to help out others in the community, such as youth and veterans, but also the chance to improve the Gateway area. Membership also opens new social opportunities. The Lodge is constantly having functions of all sorts. From a Superbowl party with the game on the big screen TV to a Valentines sweetheart ball, the Elks have it all. Regular lodge meetings will continue to be held on Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. at the Gateway Elks Lodge, 711 N.E. 100th Ave. The Elks also offer the public the chance to support groups through recycling. Donate to the paper recycling drop-box in the Lodge parking lot to help the Youth Activities Fund, supporting groups such as our area Boy Scout troops. Donate colored glass and cardboard at the recycle donation area on the north side of the Lodge in the RV parking lot to help support veterans in hospitals. The committee is in need of continued support from the community and senior parents for upcoming events. Parkrose senior parents can help support SANP by attending meetings on the first Monday of each month. This month, the meeting will be held on Monday, Dec. 2 at 7:30 p.m. at Parkrose High School, 12003 N.E. The Russellville Home Family and Community Education Program offers you the chance to learn the things they didnt teach you in school. Monthly meetings are held on a wide variety of topics from developing a healthy diet to coping with stress. This months topic will be Strengthening your mind, heart, and skills to work with diversity. Working in an ethnically diverse environment can be challenging. Practice communication tools and learn how to interact with those who are culturally different. Learn more at the next meeting, held on Thursday, Dec. 5, in the East Portland Community Center, 740 S.E. 106th Ave., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Each meeting also includes a light lunch at noon. Soroptimists of Portland East Soroptimist International is the worlds largest classified organization for executive and professional women. They give back to the community and to their members. This organization blends talents, strengths, and ideas to form a strong network of professionals to imagine and implement projects to support victims of domestic violence and to improve the status of women and children. Typical projects include participating in literacy projects; supporting shelters for battered women; participating in environmental clean-up projects; giving funds for scholarships; and other projects as dictated by community need. A major source of funds for the Soroptimist of Portland East is the All-Star Bingo Hall, located on the corner of S.E. 146th Ave. and Stark St. Come play bingo - maybe even win a little cash - and support local women and children at the same time.
