Competitive winter sports at Mid-county high schools include basketball, cheerleading, swimming, wrestling, and dance and drill. Young area athletes competed in, and excelled at, state tournaments held last month in all these sports. From the mats, courts and pools we present a selection of highlights from this past winter sports season.

Miller leads Scots at state
David Douglas senior Laura Miller won the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events at the OSAA 6A Swimming Championship meet in February while leading her team to a second place overall finish. Miller was also part of the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relay teams that placed first with times of 1:37.90 and 3:34.54, respectively. Her teammates on the relays were Emma Redwine-Hixon, Ally Olson and Nikki Overton, all freshmen. Overton earned more points for her team with a fourth place finish in the 200-yard freestyle and finished eighth in the 500-yard free event. Davita Eichner made a showing with her 10th place finish in the 200-yard individual medley and was a member of the 200-yard medley relay that finished seventh. Her relay teammates were sophomore Danielle Lisoski, Redwine-Hixon and Olson.

The DDHS boys team finished eighth overall behind the efforts of senior Mike Stratton. He placed first in the 500-yard free, finishing in 4:33.78, and third in the 100-yard breaststroke. He was also a member of the 200-yard medley relay that finished fourth. Others on the relay team were seniors Victor Dang and Sam Nelson and junior Anthony Nguyen.

Nguyen also earned a sixth place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke and 11th in the 200-yard freestyle.

Portland Christian hoopsters earn tournament bids
After successful regular season campaigns, both the boys and girls basketball teams at Portland Christian High School played in the OSAA Division 2A State Championship tournament in Pendleton last month.

The PCHS girls dropped their first-round game to Santiam (47-34), but rallied to beat Oakland (50-23) and Western Mennonite (41-37) to capture fourth place. The Royals’ Kailee Maltman, a junior, made the All-Tournament second team.

The boys defeated first-round opponent East Linn Christian (53-42), but dropped subsequent games to De La Salle North Catholic (48-51) and Western Mennonite (53-55). By virtue of that first-round win, the Royals boys earned the fifth place trophy. Senior Chris Workman led the tournament in rebounding and was an All-Tournament Team alternate selection along with teammate and senior Ryan Miller.

Raiders swimmers make a splash
Reynolds High senior Aubrey Maricle grabbed the third place trophy in the 500-yard free at the OSAA 6A meet at Mt. Hood Community College Aquatic Center and was a member of the fourth place 400-yard freestyle relay team. She also took fifth in 100-yard butterfly. Her teammates on the relay were junior Lily Gall, and Racheal Lorenson and Chrissy Vo, both freshmen. Lorenson also competed in the 100-yard butterfly, and Gall swam the 100- and 200-yard free.

Raiders boys who qualified for the state meet were senior Nick Lutton, juniors Matt Green and Tyler Byer, and sophomore Aaron Louie. They swam the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relay. Lutton also competed in the 50-yard free.

PHS boys go to state
The Parkrose High boys swim team qualified for the OSAA 5A Championship meet and took fifth place in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Relay members were seniors Alex McInerny, Connor Leines and Travis Pow, and junior Nathan Clement.

McInerny, Pow and Clement along with senior Josh Newman swam the 200-yard medley relay. Newman also qualified for the 100-yard breaststroke and McInerny for the 50-yard free as individuals. Bronco alternates for the relays were Nolan Pow and Jeremy Ibrahim.

Michele Wilcox and Gary Muzzy coach the Parkrose swim team. Wilcox was named Coach of the Year at the district tournament.

Centennial grappler grabs silver medal
Mid-county high schools were well represented at the recent OSAA 6A Wrestling State Championships. David Vieru, a Centennial High junior, led the way when he placed second in the 285 lbs. weight class. Centennial was also represented by freshman Austin Sukosd (140 lbs.), senior Cam Matthews (145 lbs.) and junior Tyler Hoecker (171 lbs.).

David Douglas sent four wrestlers to the state tournament. Junior Garrett Heinetz earned fifth place at 103 lbs. and was joined by his teammates: sophomores Nathan Fritz (119 lbs.) and Michael Brewer (152 lbs.), along with senior Petr Novozhennikov (215 lbs.).

Reynolds High senior Jordan Young earned sixth place in the 135 lbs. category. Other Raiders that competed at state were freshman Cameron Baldwin (103 lbs.), junior Alix Vang (112 lbs.) and senior Greg Smith (285 lbs.).

Cheerleaders flip at state
State cheerleading championships were held at Memorial Coliseum in February. David Douglas High captured the fourth place trophy in the 6A Large division, Reynolds High finished in 10th place among 6A Small schools and Parkrose cheerleaders came in 12th in the 5A Small category.

Teams dance their way to trophies
The Parkrose High dance team earned the second place trophy in the show group at the OSAA Dance and Drill Championships last month. Bronco coach Shannon Nguyen was selected Coach of the Year.

David Douglas placed fifth in the show category. Scots dancer Kaishia Wolfe was named to the 6A All-State team.

Centennial dancers won the fourth place trophy in division 6A Small.
