THE MID-COUNTY MEMO

Princess Mataya McNeill of Madison High School.
Princess Ciara Dines of Parkrose High School.
Princess Linda Nguyen of David Douglas High School.
Three outstanding young women will represent Memo country on the 2009 Rose Festival court.

Linda Nguyen, a David Douglas High senior, was the first area princess selected. Active in student government, Nguyen is a member of the National Honor Society, a musician, a cheerleader and a member of both the math and science clubs at DDHS. She also volunteers at Meals on Wheels and Multnomah County libraries and served an internship at Oregon Health and Sciences University.

Nguyen plans to attend Oregon State University and pursue a career in pharmacology. She is the daughter of Nho Nguyen and Hoa Bang.

Students at Parkrose High selected Ciara Dines to represent them on the court. Princess Ciara, a junior, has nine siblings and enjoys sports, singing, board games, exercise, spending time with family and church activities. She too is a National Honor Society member and is involved in student council, the Black Student Union, sings in her church choir and is on the superintendent advisory board.

Dines plans to attend a four-year college and pursue a career as a psychologist or sociologist. Her parents are Gloria and Paul Brock and Oliver Dines.

Mataya McNeill, a senior and student athlete who plays soccer and basketball and runs cross-country and track, will represent Madison High School. McNeill is vice president of the student body, an Outdoor School student leader, a MAC Scholar Athlete, and is a member of the Academy of Science and Natural Resources, the National Honor Society and Key Club. She has been a Muscular Dystrophy Association camp counselor and an occasional volunteer at the Oregon Humane Society and the Blanchet House.

With her sights set on a career in marine biology or environmental planning, Princess Mataya plans to attend a four-year university. She is the daughter of Phillene and Thomas McNeill.

Each princess receives a $3,500 scholarship and will contend for the crown of Rosaria at the coronation ceremony immediately preceding the Grand Floral Parade on Saturday, June 6.

Tickets for the 2009 Queen’s Coronation are available now. Reserved seats for prime viewing of the Coronation and Grand Floral Parade are $30; super-saver seats suitable for the Queen’s Coronation are $15. Ticket purchases are subject to handling fees.
