Paddle the slough with your family
The Columbia Slough Regatta returns for its annual festival in celebration of Portland’s hidden waterway Sunday, Aug. 7, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the St. Johns launch, 9363 N. Columbia Blvd. This is one of Portland’s finest events for the whole family. Borrow a kayak or canoe (all equipment provided) or bring your own. Despite the name, the Regatta is not actually a race; it’s more of a leisurely wildlife-watching fun paddle. Also featured will be live music, informational booths, hands-on activities and guided tours of the St. Johns Prairie. Individuals and families are welcome to bring their own boat. A donation of $8 per person is requested. No one is turned away.

Church hosts free community event
Halsey Fest, presented by Woodland Park Baptist Church with Esperanza Church, 11375 N.E. Halsey St., is Saturday, Aug. 13. Start the day by helping with an early morning cleanup along Halsey and Wielder streets beginning at 9:30 a.m., then enjoy the following activities and events from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Kids will love the bounce house, face painting and yard games. Tour classic cars, enjoy local Christian musicians and hear Christian Holst, evangelist for Drenched Ministries. Hot dogs, chips and beverages will be served.

Faithful Savior Lutheran Church holds its annual Family Fun Day Saturday, Aug. 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on church grounds at 11100 N.E. Skidmore St. Activities include a petting zoo, train rides, carnival-style games, arts and crafts and food. In addition, church members are giving away lightly used clothing, books, toys and drawing items. It’s free and family-friendly.

Dive into Portland pools
Portland Parks & Recreation facilities offer an indoor pool at East Portland Community Center and an outdoor pool at Montavilla Park. Both Parks & Rec pools are also available for private parties. In addition, David Douglas and Parkrose High School indoor pools offer recreation sessions, classes, lap swims and more.

David Douglas Aquatic Center, 13030 S.E. Taylor Ct., has summer lessons available beginning June 20. Registration is available at the center weekdays from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. and from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., as well as Saturday, June 4, from 8 a.m. until noon.

Recreational swims are Monday through Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. The cost is $2 for students and $3 for adults. Family nights are Fridays from 7:30 to 9 p.m. The cost is $5 per family. Parents must accompany their children into the water. Children must be potty-trained or wear a swim diaper.

Whitaker Ponds Nature Park, 7040 N.E. 47th Ave., has a high diversity of bat species who wait to hunt until after the sun goes down. Argay Terrace plans neighborhood sale
The Argay Terrace Neighborhood Association, tucked between Northeast 122nd and 148th avenues and I-84 and Sandy Boulevard, is holding its annual neighborhood garage sale Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 5, 6 and 7. Official sale hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Last year over 40 families participated, and from the rate of initial registrations, it looks to be an even larger event this year.

All Argay Terrace residents are encouraged to contact Katie Beymer, events committee chair at argayevents@gmail.com to register for the sale and to have your sale placed on the event map. Copies of the map will be available along the sale route and in advertising material. All school offices in the David Douglas School District reopen Monday, Aug. 22.

All K–6 students and all ninth-graders districtwide, along with new students at Fir Ridge Campus, start school Wednesday, Sept. 7. All students in grades seven, eight, 10 and 12 and returning Fir Ridge Campus students return Thursday, Sept. 8. Community Transition Program students begin Monday, Sept. 12.

See to Read Vision Screening: Come to the library for a free vision screening. The Elks Children’s Eye Clinic at Oregon Health and Science University’s Casey Eye Institute is partnering with the Oregon State Elks Association, the Oregon Library Association and Oregon Lions to provide free screenings across Oregon as a part of a statewide initiative called See to Read, which aims to detect vision problems that can only be treated successfully if caught before age 7. Oregon law now requires that public school students 7 or younger provide proof of vision screening or eye examination before entering school. Children who are screened for vision problems at the event will receive a certificate that can be used as proof of vision screening. Vision screenings are for kids ages 3 to 7 only. Friday, Aug. 12, from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Gettin’ Fitter with the Critters: In this energetic music and puppet show, Red Yarn and his Critters will lead audiences on an active adventure through American folk songs and tales. Performing classic game songs with the verve of a fitness instructor, Red Yarn will get children moving and singing along. Red’s lovable animal puppets—all decked out in their activewear—will riff on folktales like “The Tortoise and the Hare” and “Turtle’s Tug-of-War,” showing that strategy can be just as important as strength. Kids’ Ceramic Painting: Come and paint your own car, truck, butterfly, princess, dragonfly and more. We supply the ceramic pieces, paint, brushes, smocks, water tubs and mats. You come with your imagination and talent. The pieces are painted with lead-free acrylic paint and ready to be taken home in just a few minutes. Free tickets are available 30 minutes in advance. Colors of the Jungle: Meet the Oregon Bird Man and his parrots. This educational and entertaining program features a wide assortment of parrot species from four continents—including many endangered species. Learn about the natural history and unique behaviors of these beautiful creatures, as well as what is happening to them today in the wild and things to know about parrots before getting one as a pet. Wednesday, Aug. 17, from 2 to 3 p.m.

Komedy 4 da Kidz 2: Picking up where Angel Ocasio’s last silly show left off, this very funny and wacky show brings a comedic twist to juggling, object balancing and magic tricks. But the real magic comes from the interaction Angel has on stage with his audience volunteers. This show is filled with silly antics and lots of laughs. Wednesday, Aug. 24, from 2 to 2:45 p.m.

International Games Day: Kids and teens will participate in sport competitions while learning about Brazil, the host of the 2016 Summer Olympics. Local author Patricia Aguilar Morrissey will present her book, “Magdalena’s Picnic,” which highlights the Amazon rain forest. Then library staff will have special storytimes in different languages about sports and staying active. There will be interactive physical activities, face painting, raffles and prizes.
