Academic All-state

This program recognizes outstanding achievement in the classroom. Teams with a collective grade point average of 3.0 or better make the all-state list. Thirteen teams from our community have been so honored.

Reynolds High School boasts four teams with qualifying GPAs: girls cross country (3.81), girls soccer (3.31), boys cross country (3.30) and volleyball (3.30)in class 6A.

Three Portland Christian teams made the list, all ranked in the top ten state wide. Girls soccer was fourth in state (3.74); boys soccer placed sixth (3.54) and boys cross country was tenth (3.61) in class 2A.

David Douglas High School teams making the 6A list are girls cross country (3.85), volleyball (3.61) and girls soccer (3.39).

In 5A, Parkrose boys cross-country (3.15) and girls soccer (3.28) were recognized.

The boys soccer team from City Christian (1A) also made the list with a 3.39 GPA.

 

Cross-Country

It was a good year for area cross country runners. Kennedy Allen a David Douglas junior won the Mount Hood Conference girls title while teammate Hassan Ibrahim, a freshman, took second among the boys. Allen was selected girl athlete of the year by conference coaches. Other DDHS conference first team all-stars are Brynne Merkley, Abdul Ahmed and Suleiman Ibrahim. Stephi Wood earned honorable mention.

The Scots boys team of Hassan Ibrahim, Abdul Ahmed, Suleiman Ibrahim, Artem Tkachenko, Grant Collins, Josh Kellebrew and Jose Diaz qualified for state. Ibrahim was named to the second team all-state and placed 11th, and Ahmed placed 28th and earned honorable mention.

Kennedy Allen and Brynne Merkley also ran in the state meet. Allen finished eighth over all and was named first team all-state. Merkley picked up honorable mention with her 25th place finish.

The Parkrose cross country team is made up of young runners, who according to Coach Karmin Williams, “ran their personal bests, in torrential rain, through small lakes, and shoe-sucking mud” at the Northwest Oregon Conference race. Jalato Sultessa placed fifth at districts to become the first cross-country runner to represent the Broncos at state in more than 20 years. He was named first team all conference and placed 29th at the state race in Eugene.

Reynolds senior Rachel Chao qualified for state as did Raiders boys Harley West, Jacob Fry, Alex Derbyshire, Andy Solano, Jonathan Coleman, Erik Solano and Timy Ivanishchuk.

Portland Christian Schools senior Joseph Perkins finished 18th at state. Head Coach Andrew Jannsen said Perkins “has been blessed with talent and a love of running. Through hard work, both in season and off, he has seen his time in the 5 km improve by over five minutes from his freshman year. He is probably the most dedicated distance runner I have ever coached.”

 

Football

David Douglas football earned a state playoff berth but was turned away by second ranked Tigard 70-49 in the opening round of play.

Junior defensive lineman Osa Odighizuwa was named Mount Hood Conference co-defensive player of the year. Others named to the first team all conference were Nate Lampert (Jr,), offensive line and Nick Ventura (Jr.), defensive back.

Earning honorable mention were Shakur Gross (Sr.), running back; Brock Jackson (Sr.), wide receiver; Stanford Toloke (Sr), wide receiver; Lyle Westcott (Sr.), offensive line; Jesse Cetz (Sr.), linebacker; and Micah Sherman (Jr.), defensive back.

Journalism

The Bronco Blaze, the Parkrose High student newspaper won a second place trophy in its division of the newspaper competition at the annual Northwest Fall Press Day in Eugene last month. Northwest Scholastic Press Association and the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication invite middle and high school journalists to a day of workshops, contests and panel discussions each year. Students learn from professionals, exchange ideas and hear about the latest trends.

Music

Oregon Music Education Association members comb through hundreds of auditions each fall to choose students to participate in the Oregon All-state Honor Choir and Band at its annual convention in January. Students from both Parkrose and David Douglas have been invited to perform with these prestigious groups.

Felisa Armitage represents David Douglas in the all-state choir. Scots musicians chosen for the all-state band are Christine Wong, violin; Annabelle Rynerson, string bass; Rebecca Burfitt, flute; Tessa Meyer, oboe; Delaney Smith, Joseph Folwick and Stepha Kvokov, clarinet; Rebecca Tew, bassoon; Jeanie Chen, Max Baker and Kellan Grant, horn; Scott Waddington, trumpet; Raul Huezo, Wynne Chen and Emily Silva, trombone; Samantha Gilkey, euphonium; and Christian Moore, tuba.

Joe Vongsay, bass, represents Parkrose on the all-state choir for the third consecutive year. He is joined by two-time all-state honoree Timmy Nguyen, tenor, and Leah Coylea, soprano; Reed Bostic and Matt Mazon, bass.

Named to the all-state band was Bronco senior Ryan Shimojima, French horn.

Parkrose will also send a delegation to the National Association for Music Education convention in February. Coylea and Vongsay along with Jasmine Antinoro, soprano and Ria Walter, alto have been selected for the All Northwest Honors Choir.

 

Soccer

David Douglas boys went into the 6A state tournament ranked seventh. The Scots beat Forest Grove 4-0 and McMinnville 4-1 before losing to Grants Pass, 1-0, in a quarterfinal match.

Defender Herman Hermosillo was named Mount Hood Conference defensive player of the year. Forward Kingsley Armah and midfielder Carlos Bravo joined him on the all conference first team. Christian Navarro, forward; Junior Chavez, defender, Jose Cazun Rodriquez, midfielder and goalkeeper Raul Merez earned second team honors. Earning honorable mention for the Scots were defender Dontae Fernandez and midfielder Edgar Resendiz.

David Douglas girls named to conference all-star teams are Whitney Beach, forward; Tia Smith and Hailey Fleisher, defenders; along with midfielders Kennedy Englegau and Brittany Beach. All received honorable mention.

Reynolds Raiders named to boys Mount Hood All Conference teams were forward Jose Martinez, second team. Honorable mention went to forward Ismail Kljucanin, defenders Akira Clark and Salvador Pacheco and midfielders David Mendez, Ranjeet Gajmer and Dominic Senarsky.

Named to the Northwest Oregon Conference first team, Jada Krening led the way among Bronco soccer all-stars. Jewell Boland was named to the second team. Monica Rene Pettigrove, Shelby Martin, McKenzie Gray and Carla Canseco earned honorable mention.

Bronco boys receiving mention include Geiser Interian, second team all conference, and Noah Addie, Anthony Deleon, Jesus Cornejo and Thomas Thilavanh, honorable mention.

 

Volleyball

Reynolds ended the regular season 13-10 and ranked fourth in the Mount Hood Conference. That earned them a berth in the 6A state playoffs, but the Raiders were sent home by Sheldon in the first round of play. Senior libero Emily Weidlach and junior setter Kadyn Jones were named first team all league. Hitters Hannah Yamashita, a sophomore, and Lauren Tennyson, a senior, made second team all league.

Also earning all league honors in the Mount Hood Conference were David Douglas senior hitter, Nahshonia Zerufael, first team; junior hitter Gennah Schoen, second team; and senior librero Ashley Carlberg, honorable mention.

Parkrose’s Katie Saephanh and Lydia Pavlenko were named to the Northwest Oregon Conference first team, all league, while teammates Brittany Kasim and Audrey Tzeo received honorable mention.

Water Polo

Mid-county is home to talented water polo teams. Parkrose, Reynolds and David Douglas all sent teams to state tournaments.

Perennial powerhouse Parkrose led the way. The Bronco girls brought home the 5A second place trophy after victories over Ridgeview (14-2) and Summit (4-1). Madras beat them 15-5 in the championship game. Parkrose boys also earned a state berth, but they fell to the eventual 5A state champs, Summit 14-2.

Michael Simkovic, Thomas Grant, Gabby Madewell, Samantha Baumgarner, Maggie Grant and Sadie McElhaney were named to all league teams.

Madewell, Baumgarner and McElhaney were also named first team all-state. Grant was named to the second team.

Reynolds girls team began its hunt for a state title with an 18-9 win over Tigard. They were ousted from the 6A state tournament in the second round by Lincoln, losing 13-9. Lakeridge (6-4) sent Raider boys home in the first round of 6A state action. Junior Sarah Hamman and senior Morgan Mattice earned honorable mention all-state.

While both the David Douglas girls and boys teams went to state, both were ousted in the first round. The boys by Lake Oswego, 19-10 and the lady Scots by Newberg, 19-8.
